My Weekly Spock – Surfin’ Spock!

Okay, so it’s not Mr. Spock surfing, but it is Leonard with his son Adam in the early 70’s catching some waves!  Wishing you warm weather — spring will come, really!

My Weekly Spock — Some More Seventies Stills

Even though Trek was over by 1969, Nimoy’s popularity was soaring  from its syndication and exposure in Mission Impossible.  A shame Baffled didn’t get farther that a pilot, that would have been a fun show.  But Nimoy’s credits notwithstanding, he was and is  always Number 1 with his fans.

“I had to get my picture with Leonard Nimoy, even if I disturb his dessert!”

The girl in the center is totally “I want some of that!” The lady on the right is “Hands off my daughter” They guy in the back is “What’s he got that I ain’t got?”

My Weekly Spock – Nimoy drops in on a Kiddie Show

Around 1971, Mr. Nimoy made a personal appearance at Birmingham, Alabama’s  local TV station WBMG on the kiddie show Sargent Jack.  I’m Nimoy on Sgttotally digging the leather jacket!   It’s fun  to see an average Joe alongside Nimoy’s Joe Cool! Too bad there aren’t more pictures or a video of this! Would love to have heard what they chatted about.

Back then almost every local TV station with a news department had a kiddie show with a live host in character and often puppet shows, games, and cartoons.

I remember when I was a kid, our local CBS affiliate,  WNBF, Channel 12, had their show Officer Bill with Bill Parker (who still does radio!) Our Local ABC affiliate (WBJA) had their local version of Bozo the clown, and as a curly- haired Brownie, my troop 206 got to be on both shows!  (Wish I could get a video of those too!)

FArFri — “Nimoy- Star” by tafafa

As long as we’re in the 70’s groove this week here’s some serious funk-a riffic art by artist tafafa on Deviant art. Tafa LOVES to paint Nimoy in all the phases of his life, check out her stuff! Dig those bell bottoms!  Hmmm, wonder what he’s singing?

My Weekly Spock: 2/25/13 That Seventies Spock…

Here’s some 1970’s Nimoy, in an era of some of the ugliest fashion ever (oh wait, it got worse in the 1980’s!) Nimoy mostly pulled it off!

I recall receiving this very postcard from the LNAF in 1974. Oh dear, that awful white stitching, the big button Henley insert, the huge collar! The seventies are in full swing!

As Paris, in a signature neckerchief (not ascot) that would become a Nimoy favorite on screen and off throughout the 70’s.

Nice and Nautical – the neckline reflects his perfect square jaw, and the ever growing sideburns wipe out the pointy Star Trek ones for good (at least until he had to shave them again in ’78)

As Tom Kovak in ‘Baffled’- with BIG collar — collars got bigger and bigger through the 70’s until they almost engulfed the suits they were under! No matter, he’s adorable here.

With Nichelle and George at a 1974 Convention. The ascot king strikes again -- this time in a fashion forward (for the time) incredible denim patchwork suit! I remember he wore this on his Mike Douglas show appearance, sorry I don't have full length shot of it! Love Nichelle's sweater here too.

My Weekly Spock: 1/14/13 A Man, A Dog, A Cigarette, and More Plaid!

You got an eyeful of plaid in last week’s installment; here’s the other  photo from that series.  Just a man, a dog and a cigarette.  Can’t tell if this is a smoking jacket, blazer or a bathrobe. The shirt, tie and trousers are nice, but it’s too big on him and the plaid just doesn’t work.  Otherwise a nice pensive shot.  It looks like it was taken in a work shed out back,  but I think the cute dog just wants to get away from the cigarette.  ( I would too, even if it was Nimoy smoking it)leonard_nimoy_2.jpg guy webster

The Daily Scrapbook 11/28/12 Four Page Magazine Article

Here’s today’s flashback:  A four page (!) article from a 1977 movie magazine, (Probably TV Radio Mirror) raving about the Star Trek revival, this time asking if Nimoy and Shatner would be along for the ride.  At the time I thought it would never really be Trek without Mr. Spock, and millions agreed. A lot of great stills here (if some are backward, which always happened in these pieces) The commentary is definitely of the era, with commentary mentioning Hank Aaron, M*A*S*H, and Fonzie.  It appears the writer of the piece had a ball writing this; he or she must have subtly influenced my own style of prose, as it is very giddy with a lot of parenthesis and exclamations, and silly captions!  I remember liking how it described Nimoy as ‘darkly good-looking’.  Must have read it a hundred times.  I think that I was happy that a ‘major’ magazine was taking Trek seriously. But I just can’t take Shatner seriously in  that white prom tux and super collar!

My Weekly Spock 10/15/12 — Shaggy Seventies Smiles

Some Swell Shaggy Seventies Smiles! So often he was posed so seriously, it’s great to see him with that million-dollar grin. And that hair!  The first two are from an auto show.   Theo fourth is backstage, (I think from The King and I) the fifth is on a very windy day and the last has one funkadelic shirt!

The Daily Scrapbook 10/11/12

(Sorry I’m late with this today, been busy with lots of housework!)

Here’s today’s flashback — Back in ’73, we had a new paperback by author David Gerrold, called The World of Star Trek; a thick volume with lots of anecdotes, insider notes, and best of all,  over 75 pictures! When it got too quiet around the house, I’d hear my mom or sister yell “Are you reading that book again?!”  I was obsessed, especially looking at the pictures of the Trek stars as their characters next to ‘current’ photos of them.  Seeing the real-life pictures was pretty wild (George Takei with a pageboy haircut!), but I preferred looking at the old Trek headshots, and my sister decided to practice her sketching one autumn afternoon, and she drew her versions of the Kirk and Spock pictures. I loved these.  Here they are, and I’ve cleaned them up a little since the originals had some grease stains and smudges.  She made these in November of 1973, and I must have pestered her to make McCoy too because she drew his in January! Not bad for a first attempt.  Thanks Sis! Bet you didn’t know I still had these!
