Wonderful Event with Adam Nimoy! (See Pics on Instagram!)

Hi Everyone!

I was lucky to attend a wonderful event in October! Adam Nimoy (son of Leonard) appeared at the Olav Shalom Synagogue in Albany NY to discuss the Jewish Connections to Star Trek. Not only did Adam find connections to Judaism through Trek, but also gave a preview of his next book that will be out in January.

Adam was delightfully laid back and his presentation was insightful and humorous as well as reflecting on life with his father; their faith, struggles and joys. While reading passages from his book manuscript, he corrected some last minute typos to our delight. “It’s okay,” he said “it’s not out until January!”

He also expressed his wishes for peace in Israel/Gaza and all the war-zones around the world. Amen to that.

Before the talk, there was a delicious brunch with egg and tuna salads, green salad, yogurt with fresh fruit, lots of desserts, and of course, bagels-I had my first lox ever!

Adam gave a list of the 10 episodes he found that suggested the influences of his Jewish faith. Of course there is the Vulcan Greeting, “Live Long and Prosper” and its v-formation based on the Hebrew letter Shin, and it being the first letter in the Hebrew word for Peace, which is “Shalom”. Alas, I should have taken notes, so I can only give a taste of Adam’s comparisons! (Sorry!) I was mostly just enjoying the moment, and it was wonderful.

Here’s some examples; Moses wandering in the dessert was like Captain Kirk and his crew wandering throughout the galaxy. He also made references to Metamorphosis (The Companion as a caring god figure) and Journey to Babel (Nations struggling to reach a common peaceful goal) His favorite episode of TOS was The Menagerie, as he loved that it incorporated his father’s first appearance as Spock into a two-episode arc.

And on a personal level, he also cited the story of Jonah and the Whale as it related to his own struggle with pot addiction, and finally being saved. This was very moving. I would add my own example here, the (New Testament) tale of The Prodigal Son in a way reflected the time between Adam and his father when their relationship was strained for a time, and not being in each other’s lives. Yet in time, and thankfully a good length time before Leonard was struck with COPD, he and Adam had reunited in love and a much better, closer father-son relationship, to the end of Leonard’s days.

(I noted that Adam’s talk was being recorded, so I’m hoping that if it is put on line, I’ll be able to share it with you!)

My friend Bobbie* and I attended this event together, and we both had the chance to meet and greet Adam and have our picture taken with him. (Yay!) Bobbie (who is her town historian) is working very hard on a project to get a commemorative USPS stamp of Leonard in time for the 10th year anniversary of his passing in 2015. (She was active in having the stamp of Edmonia Lewis made for the USPS Black Heritage stamp series most recently). Bobbie showed Adam her thick file, filled with all her work to date in her stamp proposal, with recommendations of insights to Leonard’s patriotism, philanthropy and how his character of Spock is a true American icon, with his brave and caring discipline. Adam said “You know more about my Dad than I know!” Here’s hoping Bobbie succeeds!

I gave Adam a 500 piece puzzle I had made up of the 90th birthday tribute to his Dad. He was surprised and intrigued by the intricate collage I made of his fathers life, and enjoyed seeing even tiny pictures of himself and his sister Julie contained within! I hope he and his family will enjoy the puzzle over the holidays!

Bobbie and I both got our pictures taken with him, and we each couldn’t resist throwing in a hug! What a fine mensch! Adam, if you’re reading this, Thank you again, and it was a pleasure!

Guess Who Was in My Home State Last Month?

I was really busy last month so I didn’t find out about this until the day after it passed, but dang! William Shatner was in New York State!

There’s this wonderful tourist attraction in Ticonderoga NY which re-creates all of the original Enterprise sets in a vacated Dollar Store property!  In May,a special “Weekend with the Captain” was held and William Shatner was the guest of honor!

I’m sorry I missed it, but my friend and member here Bobbie, did make it and got her picture with Bill. (Here’s Bobbie and Bill!)

Bobbie and Bill May 2018

Here’s my friend Bobbie with Bill Shatner on the bridge! Isn’t it amazing?

As you will read here, Bill really enjoyed visiting the remarkable set built with original blueprints by local, devoted Trekkie (and professional Elvis impersonator) James Cawley.  It was like going back in time and every detail is filled with precision and love.  No doubt an emotional experience for Bill, and I gotta hand it to the Shat-man: Bill is 87 and still enjoys seeing his fans and doing Trek events.  I hope I have his energy when I’m his age!  He is truly Living Long and Prospering!

Also, if you’re interested in visiting the Trek set replica or going to the annual ‘Trekonderoga’ convention, see info here.

Happy 85th Birthday Nichelle Nichols!

Before it gets too late — Today is December 28, 2017, and it is Nichelle Nichols 85th Birthday!   Our radiant, beloved First Lady of Star Trek!

Hope you’ve had a day as beautiful as you are, Nichelle!  (I just finished this collage!)  May God and the Great Bird of the Galaxy Bless you on your special day and always!   Love and Hugs, Therese ❤

Another Trek Photo Treasure Trove – In Color!

Hey Kids, I’m back!

Thanks for your patience, for it is truly rewarded today!

A while back I posted some wonderful black and white photos from the eBay dealer rexliv who had come across rare negative directly from the original series sets, taken by studio photographers to capture rehearsal and publicity photos for the series.  Just when I thought these were the holy grail of Trek memorabilia, rexliv strikes again with COLOR NEGATIVES!

How the dealer describes his find is nothing short of miraculous, and the fact that these have not been destroyed in over 50 years and are in remarkable condition is astonishing.  As the dealer states in his descriptions:

This authentic Color original Film Negative from the Original Star Trek TV Series is in excellent Condition for its age. During the Production of Star Trek, Photographers were hired to take Publicity Photo’s of the Series for magazine distribution and for advertising purposes. I recently obtained quite a few of these Publicity Negatives from a woman in new York City. She stated that she obtained them from a friend who worked in a professional Photo Lab as a Custom Photo Printer in New York City during the Mid-1980s. He stated to her that he was assigned to clean out the Dead Photo Files at the Lab when he found the Star Trek Negatives. The woman had kept them in their original envelopes along with their original Contact Sheets ever since the Mid-1980s when her friend had given them to her. Each five frame negative strip was enclosed in a clear plastic sleeve. Since the negatives were taken by an On Set Photographer, they are obviously a “One Of A Kind” Film Negative and display different angles of the actors as they posed for Publicity Photo’s and during live action scenes from the Episodes. They are quite RARE indeed.

Well Yes indeed! Welcome to Trekkie Heaven Everyone!

NOTE:  Currently many of these negatives are NOT up for sale, and some of them have been sold. However, they are VERY LIKELY to go back up for auction. So for you diehards, I highly recommend you check out the dealer’s current auctions here.  You can see the completed (and may unsold) auctions here.  He is also currently  selling positive contact sheets of the full  color negatives.  These auctions will end TOMORROW  (Friday, October 27)  So check it out before they end!

I’ve posted the photos of the positive images that the dealer posted that are not included in the actual auctions but used as examples of how the negatives would look when processed.  I’ve enhanced a few of these positive images to improve their tone and contrast.  And man, what a find!  From De Kelley’s incredible baby blues to Shatner’s smirks and the occasional Nimoy grin, it’s like I’ve traveled in a time machine back to 1966!

Wow. Just Wow.  You can see why not all of these were used (lighting off, or someone coughed)  But they are totally iconic, regardless. Man, how I would have loved that job!  I’ll post more in the coming weeks. Enjoy!
