Sorry I haven’t posted a Weekly Spock lately; I’ve been very busy in a local stage production of Oliver! (One more weekend!) But speaking of theater, as I was browsing yesterday I came across the marvelous site by the New York Public Library, who have digitized thousands of images from the last 6 centuries! You can look up everything from Theater programs to political cartoons here.
I was delighted to come across these photos by Martha Swope, taken in Detroit, Michigan of the 1974 touring production of Sherlock Holmes which featured Leonard Nimoy and Alan Sues. Nimoy is seen holding a Calabash pipe (which btw Holmes never used in the original books, but was introduced in the movies by actor William Gilette). He is also seen about to be shot by Dr. Moriarity (Alan Sues of Laugh-in) and shockingly also about to inject himself; I assume with a heroin needle. (Holmes was an addict, who eventually broke the bad habit). I’ve seen some of these in black and white before, but these color photos are a treat! Enjoy these rare pictures!
