Wideo Wednesday: Leonard Nimoy reads Desiderata by Max Ehrmann

The poem still holds true today, and perhaps even more so in our very loud, cluttered world. Written with great foresight by Max Ehrmann in 1927.    Beautiful.  Thank You, Mr. Nimoy.

I remember when this was made into a song in the 1970’s (partially spoken by Vincent Price).  Here’s the full poem:

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Max Ehrmann, “Desiderata”

My Weekly Spock (@1966) Forty Questions for Mr. Spock

Here’s a fine slice of nostalgia!  I found this on Tumblr — it’s an incredible, personal and very long interview from Mr. Nimoy in 1966, where he answers 40 questions from a movie magazine.  Love the opening shot if Nimoy talking into a state-of-the-art tape recorder (not so thrilled with the cigarette shot, but  everyone smoked in the 60’s)  Great insight into the 35 year old Nimoy’s mind! I wonder how much holds true today?

The Daily Scrapbook “Leonard Nimoy- At Last, He’s a Man!

Here’s today’s flashback:  From a movie magazine in the early 70’s, this article declares that Nimoy is at last a man!.  No, it’s not about his Bar Mitzvah some 30 years earlier, but rather how he’s finally playing a human male in Mission Impossible! Yet despite it’s praise for Nimoy’s achievements, the actor was never far from the shadow of Mr. Spock.  I have to admit though, I’ve never thought of Mr. Spock as having ‘green skin’ (it was more just pale with a touch of green cast!)  The snotty caption under the publicity picture doesn’t help!  One has no doubt than Nimoy was all man to begin with!

My Weekly Spock – Mr. and Mrs.

I came across these lovely pictures of Leonard and Susan (Bay) Nimoy at the premiere of Star Trek: Into Darkness last May.  Married over 2 decades and obviously still crazy about each other;Leonard+Nimoy+Star+Trek+Premieres+Hollywood+gj_J3FBzBlDl Leonard+Nimoy+Star+Trek+Darkness+Premieres+cqEcFKghvlbl Leonard+Nimoy+Star+Trek+Premieres+Hollywood+B4l8LoM0fTol Leonard+Nimoy+Star+Trek+Premieres+Hollywood+8pPaMxsNT1Cl Leonard+Nimoy+Star+Trek+Premieres+Hollywood+7k50T3_knkBl you can see the love. The Daily Scrapbook “Dressing Room Secrets of Star Trek”

Here’s today’s flashback: From TV Star Parade in July of 1967 comes this great look into the costume and make-up workings of the original series. Love the Spock make-up sessions, promotional photos, and of course the ever-incredible drapings of William Ware Theiss.  It was Theiss’s designs that inspired me to study costume design in college, a skill I still use today on my homemade dolls.  To see more of Theiss’s great Trek work, click here.  And look how much of Nimoy’s eyebrows were shaved off! No wonder he hid behind horn rimmed glasses off screen!

The Daily Scrapbook “Spock: Teenage Outcast”

Here’s today’s flashback:  From teen magazine FaVE in the 1960’s, Nimoy explains how Spock was a teenage outcast, and addresses the stigma of being bi-racial.  A good lesson in self worth! (And a great gesture by Nimoy) I bet a lot of kids appreciated this.

My Weekly Spock – Football season! Nimoy in Francis Goes to Westpoint (1952)

I admit, I am not into football at all.  I have no idea who the top teams are,  I don’t do fantasy football teams, couldn’t care less about who wins the Superbowl,  but this is a game I’d watch! (Nimoy in Francis Goes to Westpoint 1952)  The guy on the left has a perfect Jim Kirk hairdo…

The Daily Scrapbook – “He’s out of this world…Leonard Nimoy”

From March 1967 — you know you’re hot when you’re featured in a Archie-Style comic book!  In this case, it’s “Tippy Teen”, and Leonard Nimoy is “Out of this World!”  The article is presciently predicts that ‘Len’ “will keep going strong for a long time”! And he does!  🙂   (I honestly don’t think anyone in real life calls him “Len”, but what a groovy guy!)

My Weekly Spock — How’s THIS for a meeting of minds?

Mr. Nimoy posted this on his Twitter feed this past week — Wow! I think if these three men ruled the world it would be a happier place!  Could you three at least do a Shakespeare play together? 🙂

My Weekly Spock 9/23/13 Nimoy on The Captain and Tenille Show (1976) (Photos and Video)

Hey Kids,

In the waning years of the weekly Variety Show format Mr. Nimoy appeared as a guest star on the short-lived Captain and Tenille Show.  For you youngsters out there, a Variety Show was a weekly entertainment broadcast which usually featured comedy skits and musical numbers.  The closest thing we have today is Saturday Night Live.  The Captain and Tenille were best known for their hit song “Love Will Keep us Together” (Never one of my favorites)  and the producers at ABC figured this was enough to qualify them for their own variety show.  The result is, well…I’d still take this any day over Miley Cyrus!  Nimoy appeared in several skits here, the best (in a very nice blue suit) as “Alistair Bannister”, the host of “Masterjoke Theater”* where he performs the running joke that every guest host would  do;  ending the skit with a pie in the face. He also does a Shatner-Style ballad/poem with the couple.   I give him credit for being able to laugh at himself, and any TV appearance he made was welcome by me! Here’s his skits:

You can buy the whole series here. (It’s episode 5)

*Masterjoke Theater was C&T’s version of the much loved Masterpiece Theater with Alistair Cooke.
