Been a while since I’ve done one of these. And Kang, you got some ‘splainin’ to do!  Enjoy!

The Daily Scrapbook 5/16/13 December 8, 1979, Star Trek: The Motion Picture Premieres!

Here’s today’s flashback:  The day had finally come! After 10 years fans fervent hopes of a comeback,  of waiting for the day when Star Trek would return, it was finally here!  I remember waiting outside the Cameo Theater in Binghamton on that cold winter night for the first showing with my school pal John and we couldn’t wait to see how this ‘Human Adventure’ would unfold. (The Press photo below is of the line for the second showing that night) I recall being happy to see the ol’ crew again, and delighted that Spock was back.  I liked the beginning, I liked the end, but couldn’t recall much from the middle.   And I couldn’t help but wonder why parts of it seemed so slow and sometimes the dialogue was barely above a whisper! I admit, I said it was great to fellow patrons on the way out, but in my heart I knew it was more a matter of ‘be careful what you wish for’. Was this  dull, beige-y/grey saga the future of my beloved show?  It was Trek, but just not quite Trek enough; where was the humor and the spirit of the original? I admit, I almost gave up on Trek after this version, but the sequel in ’82 made me much happier!

My Weekly Spock: Gimme a Head with Hair…

Mr. Nimoy sure has certainly been blessed with excellent follicles all his life– (Is that the sound of Shatner envy?  ;-)) Who could forget the Spock’s silky black hair or Paris’ luscious waves? Here’s some of Mr. Nimoy’s greatest hair hits:

The Daily Scrapbook – 2nd review of Takei Visit

Hey Kids,   Back in the day we had not one but two daily local newspapers, a full size evening edition and a morning tabloid (all the better to get the full days news)  This  is the second review of George Takei’s visit to BCC, and it mentions George’s early political involvements as well as an accurate description of the new movies uniforms as “Dr. Dentons” (you youngster’s  can see here for that reference!)

FarFri 7/12/13 ‘Blueshirts’ by Rinzler

blueshirts_by_rinzler-d3ildovWell, here’s something you don’t see everyday…Now there’s been a lot of ‘shipping’ between Spock and Chapel, Spock and Uhura, Spock and Kirk and even Kirk and McCoy –but for a change, here’s a workplace romance between Nurse Chapel and Dr. McCoy.   Yeah, I could see that;  he’d be much better for her than (android) Dr. Korby!

The Daily Scrapbook 7/12/13 –(12/4/1979) The Stardates have been kind to Mr. Sulu

Here’s Today’s Flashback:  From December 4, 1979, a local review of George Takei’s visit to BInghamton at Broome Community College.  Funny when you thing that as promotion tours go, it’s surprising how often we had Trek stars come to our little upstate haven.  Why Bingamton and nearby areas?  My theory is that at the time, it was still an IBM town, and Paramount had a targeted audience with all the computer geeks there!

Wideo Wednesday (a little late) Randy Travis- Forever and Ever Amen

I admit, I’m not a country music fan, and really don’t like how most of it’s been produced in the last few decades, (I’m more in to folk and bluegrass).  However, I’ve always enjoyed  Randy Travis’  sweet honeyed voice.   So sorry the man is sick and hoping he’ll recover from his terrible heart trouble and stroke.  Good luck and blessings to him and his family.  Here’s ‘Forever and Ever, Amen”

The Daily Scrapbook:7/11/13–December 1979– George Takei Comes to my Community College!

Here’s today’s flashback:  From December of 1979, a poster I snatched from the halls of Broome Community College to nab the signature of visiting George Takei!   George was promoting the new Trek Movie, and as I recall, the college gymnasium got pretty full!   I still have an old audio cassette of George’s talk somewhere, and when I find and figure out how to convert it I’ll definitely post it here.   I recall George talking about director Robert Wise, and trying to recall some of the pictures Wise had directed.  Being the seasoned old movie know-it-all at the tender age of 18 as I was, I remember listing them out loud to Mr. Takei, (just to help, you know!) “Sound of Music, West Side Story, The Day the Earth Stood Still…”  (Man, what a wise-ass big mouth I was!)  Ah well, just chalk it up to my fan girl tendencies at the time.  George was as effervescent and delightful as usual, and it was a joy to see him. (love his smile!) I do remember having a camera (for once) at this particular event, but don’t know if I have the one picture I took of him signing autographs!  Note how the designer of the poster clumsily (or intentionally?) added the picture of the Enterprise completely upside down!

Here’s today’s flashback:  From November of 1979, a quick blurb about the  Star Trek comic coming soon to our daily newspaper and an ad announcing a visit at my local community college by Mr. Sulu himself, George Takei!  (I was a new student at BCC at the time, and my enthusiasm for Trek hadn’t dimmed)
