UPDATE — The Completed Version of “Let’s Hear It For the 430!”

Hey kids, here’s the final and complete version of the poster I put up here last week — now with even MORE crewmen! It seems that every time I thought it was safe to finish this, I found another crew member (some notable, like Mr. D’Amato from ‘That Which Survives”) that I couldn’t leave out! This is actually the third reboot of this poster, but I’m done now, really!   Be sure to click on the image to see the full size version, I don’t want you to miss a thing!

I’m working on a Key to identify all these people too, so stay tuned!

Ever wonder where the women of the Enterprise get their hair done? How many famous ‘do’s can you identify?

My Weekly Spock: 1/14/13 A Man, A Dog, A Cigarette, and More Plaid!

You got an eyeful of plaid in last week’s installment; here’s the other  photo from that series.  Just a man, a dog and a cigarette.  Can’t tell if this is a smoking jacket, blazer or a bathrobe. The shirt, tie and trousers are nice, but it’s too big on him and the plaid just doesn’t work.  Otherwise a nice pensive shot.  It looks like it was taken in a work shed out back,  but I think the cute dog just wants to get away from the cigarette.  ( I would too, even if it was Nimoy smoking it)leonard_nimoy_2.jpg guy webster

The Daily Scrapbook 1/14/13; February 18, 1978, Leonard Nimoy comes to town!

Well kids, last week,  I showed you a picture of Mr. Nimoy that a fan sent me in 1976, and this week I recall the time I finally acheived my teen heartthrob dream; Meeting Mr. Nimoy.   Well, it started in January of 1978 with the announcement that Leonard Nimoy would be in Elmira NY on a lecture circuit on  February 18 at the Clemons Center.  I was totally on board!   I was aware of this already since my quarterly bulletin from the LNAF had informed me of his impending arrival.  Suffice to say, I was buzzing for month in anticipation.   Could I get his picture and autograph?  What would I say if I met him? Could I shake his hand? (Insert teenage “squee!” here).  My mom ordered the tickets, and weeks later,  we were off to Elmira, 40 minutes away, on a freezing cold night in February.  Halfway there I realized — I FORGOT MY CAMERA!!!!   But then again, my pocket camera took crappy pictures and my mom’s Kodak Instamatic would be just fine, except she FORGOT HERS TOO! Crushed. I’d just have to  rely on a good memory and journaling for this one. Oh well, at least we had good seats (second row!) and  couldn’t wait to see him in person.  Looks like the poster here had some last minute editing on the date, but as long as he was really coming to town that’s all that mattered!

(Tomorrow:  Leonard Nimoy in Person!)

The Daily Scrapbook: 1/10/13 — Jan 1978- Integrated Astronauts and actual, never before seen photo of Leonard Nimoy!

Scrapbook is back!  Sorry I haven’t posted much of this lately, but I’ve been busy with family, holidays, and launchingmy home business.

Here’s today’s flashback:  First, from January 1978, an article about real space explorers–This was a big improvement in NASA operations, this was the first class  of astronaut candidates who weren’t exclusively white males–(Nichelle Nichols’ work as a NASA promoter really worked!)  You see a photo of candidate Anna Fisher and her husband William.  Among the candidates, 6 women, three African-Americans, and one Asian, including future first woman in space Sally Ride, and sadly, three of the future doomed shuttle Challenger, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, and Judith Resnik.  To see the enthusiasm and joy these candidates felt at the time is now bittersweet, but we will never forget their drive and determination, not to mention being pioneers of NASA integration.  V1-pg 61

The other exciting post here is a hot,  actual photo of Leonard Nimoy taken by fan Joanne Brooks of Indiana, whom I had met a the Star Trek Convention in ’76. (scroll down for bigger copy).   As I recall, Joanne was a pretty,  tall, blond 30-something mother wearing a perfect home-custom designed blue Trek uniform-she looked great! Spock was her favorite (hence the blue).  I wish I had a picture of her, but OF COURSE my pocket camera wasn’t working well!   I envied her not just for her great costume, but because she met Nimoy at a play that same year! She had sent me this sweet letter with the picture right after the convention. I wrote back with great delight, sheepishly asking if she could possibly make me a costume too, but  eventually I made my own uniform.Hey Joanne, if you’re still out there, drop us a line! And thanks for the wonderful memory!  Letter from Trek Fan Joanne 01 9-8-76 copy

Letter from Trek Fan Joanne 02 copyHere’s a close up photo-shopped version of the candid.  Nimoy is still very much in his ascot phase here (which suited him fine) – always happy to pose for a fan!

Yesterday , January 8th, would have been Elvis’ Birthday — in that spirit, here’s a couple of videos showing the Elvis/Star Trek connection! (Well, some of  the Elvis movies and Star Trek were both made by Paramount, so that’s not too surprising!) I always thought Kirk was the Elvis of the Galaxy!

Toon Tuesday 1/8/13– Viva Las Shore Leave! Dr. Presley is in!

Since today would have been Elvis’ 78th Birthday, and since he made many of his movies at Paramount, and since his natural swagger would have made him a perfect Starfleet swinger, this seemed appropriate!   If Elvis was The Enterprise’s Cheif Medical Officer, he would have given Kirk a run for his money!   These girls belong in Viva Las Vegas! anyway!
