My Weekly Spock 1/20/14 -Nimoy in Patchwork on Mike Douglas (PHOTOS)

Hey Kids, I’m back!  Feeling much better now, thanks for your patience. Now, here as promised a while back – a bunch of nice stills from Leonard’s appearance on The Mike Douglas Show in 1973– in that glorious blue denim patchwork suit! Pretty “in-your-face”, really! Douglas himself , in his awful brown polyester, is in awe of it. And you can see that he gets “the ear question” from little Mason as he motions around his famous ears!
Enjoy, and good to be back, Therese

My Weekly Spock: The Patchwork Suit!!! (Nimoy on Mike Douglas-Video)

Hey Kids,

Having a crazy busy week prepping for Christmas!  So many projects to finish! I’ll post a bit more next week, but for now, here’s some truly funk-a-delic Nimoy from 1974, in his memorable appearance on The Mike Douglas Show!

Thrilled someone posted this, although I know there’s more than this! I’ve been looking for images of this incredible, phenomenal,  denim patchwork suit, and you got to give the guy credit for pushing the fashion envelope!  (He could fly away in those lapels!) –Next week I’ll post some stills!

Anyone remember Mason Reese? He was an advertising sensation in the early 70’s for his quirky looks and voice.  So much so that he got a whole week as ‘co-host’ on the Mike Douglas talk show.  Man, I remember watching this when it first came on (my Mom watched it every day).  A shame Douglas didn’t have Nimoy as his co-host for a week, (although he did guest several times) Nimoy’s so sweet to his little fan here, saying:  “We’ll take you on a trip on the Enterprise” Oh man, did I envy Mason here!

So as an early Christmas Present, Here’s your deliciousness for today!

My Weekly Spock – Spock’s ‘Primitive Sexuality’ Revealed!!

Hey Kids,

Remember a while back when I re-colored and edited an old article from the 60’s about The Primitive Sex Appeal of Dr. Spock? Well, if you don’t, Here’s the link.  As you may recall, I flipped the picture, fixed the color and changed the lettering to reflect Spock’s correct title (for as we know, Spock was not a pediatrician!) I was so frustrated that I couldn’t find the rest of that article.  But now, to my delight and for your enjoyment, the genius behind the tumblr blog “Beyond Spock” has found the rest of the article, that I now present here, complete with my corrected front page! The psychologist, Dr. Carol Hofburnham,  credits Nimoy’s performance for part of Spock’s magnetism, but credits most of it to  Spock’s unconscious roots in Beowulf, Sir Lancelot, and the  Satyr.  (We all know better, of course.) Enjoy!

My Weekly Spock – Pretty Handy

Creative people always use their hands a lot in conversations and Mr. Nimoy is no exception. I noticed he used his hands a lot when I saw him in person last June,  and as I am half-Italian, I can always appreciate that type of expressiveness in a person!  I’ll never forget him throwing out the Vulcan salute as he got into his cab that day with a big smile on his face (sorry I didn’t catch it in a picture). Here’s some ‘handy’ pics. 😉

A murderous hand? Eeek!

My Weekly Spock — From 1954: Nimoy on Dragnet

Daaaah- Da- Dum-Dum.     Daaaah- Da- Dum-Dum -DAAAAAAAAH!

Yup, anyone over 35 should recognize those famous opening bars from the great old Jack Webb series Dragnet.  (God, I’m old!) Many a young future star would be cast as that weeks latest juvenile delinquent, and Nimoy was no exception.  So without further adieu, here’s “Just the Facts, Ma’am”…

Last week we had some vintage stills from Nimoy’s appearance on Highway Patrol, this week he’s still on the wrong side of the law as young punk Julius Carver on the episode “The Big Boys” — note the goofy mustache!  Here he is with his co-conspirator in the famous ‘line-up’ pictures seen at the end of each episode!  Nimoy later appeared on Dragnet again in 1959, but I’m still looking for that one.

With all the ‘heavy’ roles he had to play, is it any wonder Nimoy was pleased to play Spock; a character his “mother could be proud of”! IMG_7803

IMG_7804 IMG_7802 Here’s a video clip I found of Nimoy’s very short scenes:

My Weekly Spock – Nimoy as ‘Ray’ on Highway Patrol

Here’s Leonard as Ray,  a heavy (of course) on the Highway Patrol episode ‘Blood Money’. (1958) As sleek and suave as Don Draper, even when his Brylcreem fails, yet such a gangly runner over the railroad tracks! But he gets to wear a cool porkpie hat, and at least he didn’t die in the end –you don’t mess with Broderick Crawford, kids!

My Weekly Spock: Happy Paris!

Since Paris seemed so somber and serious last week,  I thought we should see his happy side too! See, spying isn’t all bad! (But that Brillo beard has got to go!)

My Weekly Spock -Autumn in Paris

Been a while since we’ve been to ‘Paris’ eh?  So serious and intense! (and always fine in a uniform)

My Weekly Spock – Halloween Edition; Spock goes Trick or Treating.

Since Halloween is this Thursday, I wanted to give all my Scrappers a treat!   It’s always so nice to see Spock out of uniform, :-P, so I thought it would be fun to recall all the times Mr. Spock had to conceal his…non-conformity. Nimoy must have been the costumer William Ware Theiss’ dream, with a tall slender but muscled physique that made him the perfect clothes horse!  Of course, if Spock came trick or treating, I’d give him the whole bowl of candy…then lock him inside for the night!  Happy Halloween, Everyone!

Here’s my 10 favorite Spock Costumes.sog (All collages by me, click on the thumbnails for more detail).

10)  I Wanna be a Cowboy–Not a full costume, but man, he’s totally working the  gun-belt!  (From Spectre of the Gun)

tsop

9) Off-Duty — We never see when or where Spock changed into this green utilitarian jumpsuit (and lace-up army boots) but I have no doubt that Leila gave him a good excuse to tear out of his duty blues!

bac8)   The Slave – A simple look from Bread and Circuses.  Spock wears  grey trousers and nicely fills out the chain link sweatshirt of the  other ‘Sun Worshipers’ of the 20th century Romans, but conceals his points under a sleek knit cap. Extra points for bare biceps.

CEF collage7) Depression Laborer – Another knit cap, and they were sure lucky to find perfectly fitting ‘Mom’ jeans and shirts in Edith Keeler’s world! Extra points for the  green pea coat.  There’s got to be a gif of Spock tucking in his shirt somewhere! (The City On the Edge of Forever)

ROA coll6) Just another Archon – (Return of the Archons) Spock always cut a dashing figure in a cape, and this is my favorite! The draped cowl perfectly frames his angular features.   The sleekness continues with the sharp cut of his trouser and vest combo.

EOM collage5) A Dealer of Kevas and Trillium: (Errand of Mercy) Another cape, but none of the natives had any problem with his ears here (perhaps because they were really just blobs of energy to begin with!)  Bonus points for the lovely dark blue velvet, long skinny legs in tights, and for being a precursor to the 1980’s in furry dancer leggings!

pscoll4) A Platonian Serenader(Plato’s Stepchildren) Could you imagine how Spock would have reacted as he was forced to wear this green toga? (Most illogical!)  Spock’s gown was a lot more dignified than Kirks, and the lovely deep green set off his dark hair.

POF Col3) Nazi His Style — Spock got to wear two different Nazi uniforms in Patterns of Force, and although it’s true that the Nazi’s (here as Ekosians) were pure evil, they did have very sharp, beautifully tailored uniforms. (aside from Hitler’s name on the armband) Of course, Spock fans prefer when Spock isn’t wearing the top of uniform at all!–a whole 20 minutes of the episode.

MM2) A Pirate’s Life for Him— Now granted, this is the Spock from the alternate Universe,(Mirror,Mirror) but damn!  Alternate Spock’s uniform was given even more elegant detail than Kirk’s golden  vest;  The tunic was a shiny blue single-breasted jacket, piped in gold with gold sash, and the cravat at the neck accented his magnificent goatee (Swoon!), giving the look an almost gi quality. Wish we could have seen a sequel  episode with this Spock.  Note the boots also are practically thigh-high, making the look even more sinister.

apota1) A Piece of That Action – Spock goes gangster, and the crowd raves — fortunately Kirk and Spock yet again are able to steal perfectly fitting suits (and shoes) from the natives on Sigma Iotia II!   His pointy ears aren’t well disguised, but who cares?  He’s dressed to kill! (Gotta say, Bill and Leonard look so beautiful in this episode, I could die!–I’d go crazy if  these suits were still around and went up for auction!) (A Piece of the Action)

My Weekly Spock (@1966) Forty Questions for Mr. Spock

Here’s a fine slice of nostalgia!  I found this on Tumblr — it’s an incredible, personal and very long interview from Mr. Nimoy in 1966, where he answers 40 questions from a movie magazine.  Love the opening shot if Nimoy talking into a state-of-the-art tape recorder (not so thrilled with the cigarette shot, but  everyone smoked in the 60’s)  Great insight into the 35 year old Nimoy’s mind! I wonder how much holds true today?
