A very Happy (if slightly late) Birthday Wish for the marvelous Dorothy C. Fontana (March 25) who penned many of the original Trek episodes that deepened Spock’s history and culture, and made him the beloved Vulcan he became! (Amok Time, Journey to Babel), You can read all about wonderful and inspiring D.C Fontana here. (Thanks Corylea for the reminder!)
Hope you had a great day Dorothy! You are an inspiration to writers (especially women) everywhere! ❤
Hey Captain! Our Captain hits 86 today! Happy Birthday Bill! God bless you with another beautiful year and many many more!
BTW, Guess who I got my picture taken with last June at Star Trek: Mission New York? — I was wearing my Dr. Miranda Jones costume and had Bill hold a faux red rose with me, just like in the episode! (Silly me!) He looks perfectly flummoxed here, but it was totally worth it!
I’ll write more about my convention experiences from last year soon; very busy lately with my two jobs and also rehearsing for local production of Jesus Christ Superstar!
Hi Kids,
As I write this we are at 2+ feet of snow outside my door! (I live in NYS) This is a whopper of a storm, so naturally I thought I should feature Spock and company in a snowy backdrop today! Stay warm my fellow storm-bearers!
Sorry I haven’t posted in a while – I’ve been sick for a couple of weeks but mostly well now! Wishing you a very Valen-Trek Day! ❤
Just came across this great article from the 1975 magazine
Movie Monsters. The magazine had printed a scathing, negative letter to the editor about Trek in its issue of Dec. 1974 (You can see that one here). And Trek fans were so incensed they protested mightily. The magazine responded with this very positive article about the best Trek had to offer as opposed to Lost In Space among others. It’s fun to see how the article addressed the growing popularity of a canceled TV show as it began its resurrection. I’m sure at this point they never would have thought that Roddenberry’s ‘oddball creation’ would become the rich franchise it is 50 years on!
There are some funny mistakes here too, like incorrectly identifying Michael Ansara (Kang) as Steve Ihnat (Garth) (and they spelled Ihnat wrong with an extra ‘t’) ! Also, why is a space station with no connection to Trek on the front page?

Holy Cow – McCoy kissed Yeoman Barrows! I can’t wait to see what other gems this video will reveal! You also see some smiling Nimoy here ❤
Hey Kids,
Today is a special anniversary! It was 50 years ago today, November 17, 1966, that Star Trek aired the first part of it’s only 2-part episode, The Menagerie, on NBC.
The episode conveniently helped keep production costs down by recycling Star Trek’s original pilot The Cage into a new story about Spock’s loyalty to his first captain, Christopher Pike. Pretty clever, actually, and aren’t we grateful for it! Gene didn’t want the pilot to be forgotten, and by making it the center of a new episode, it built up the canon of the original series.
But even more importantly, it offered first insights into Mr. Spock’s past, and revealed his devotion to his first captain, now seriously paralyzed, and willingness to risk court martial and even death to give his captain a better life. It also gave us our first inklings into just how human this logical, stoic Vulcan could be. I’ll discuss more about it in a future post. But for now, I really loved this episode. A shame there were not more two-parters made.
Do you have a favorite moment? Here’s some images from the classic episodes – with my silly captions, of course! (Hmm, maybe I should turn this into a full fledged comic…) But if you haven’t seen it, get thee to thy nearest streaming site! (Netflix, Amazon, etc)

Fun fact: Did you know that ‘The Menagerie’ and ‘Court Martial’ were filmed back-to-back? Maybe they had narrow window for dress uniform rentals! 😉
