The Daily Scrapbook: 3/13/13 (1978) “Nimoy Up to his Ears in Star Trek”

Here’s today’s flashback:  From 1978, a reprint of yesterday’s article from our local paper, a quick blurb with a picture of Leonard and Sandy (yeah, I scoured a lot of movies magazines to find any new pictures on Leonard and Trek people, (Man, was I loser or what?)   .   Is it me or does Sandy always look shocked or worried in pictures? And yet another Grin and Bear It comic, another stereotypical jab at female astronauts (still cute though)V2-014 Complete 2 V2-014C

The Daily Scrapbook: 3/12/13 (August 1978) “Nimoy Shoots Down Myths about Mr. Spock”

Here’s today’s Flashback:  From August 29th and September 10, 1978 –First Nimoy replies to the many fabrications made about Spock over the years, and a quick blurb about how security was tightened for the movie after blueprints were stolen.   I especially like how Nimoy reminds those not familiar with Spock that the character is NOT cold and unemotional, just trained to hide his emotions, which I’m sure isn’t easy for a half-human! The Daily Scrapbook 3/11/13 From 1978, More Trek Movie News, Blueprints Stolen!

Here’s Today’s flashback:  From August 1978, It appears in the ’70’s, fans couldn’t wait for spoilers either. A merchandiser promoting artwork for the Trek movie stole the actual blueprints for the (then) new Enterprise and attempted to sell copies to fans at $75 a pop! That wasn’t nice!   He was caught. Wonder whatever happened to him?  Also, a 1975  Seventeen Magazine asks “Who’s Cool?” and suggests Mr. Spock vs. The Fonz. V2-012

FArFri 2/22/13 Spock and Zarabeth by Marcello Baez

Spock_And_Zarabeth_by_Marcelo_BaezContinuing our romantic theme for February, here’s a beautiful, if sad moment in Star Trek history.  Spock reluctantly  bids Zarabeth goodbye in Spock and Zarabeth by artist Marcelo Baez. You can really feel the cold here.   It’s nice to see that many modern artists still like to draw characters and images from this classic series, and Bael is a wonderful artist!   I recall wishing that Spock could have taken her with him!  Well, they’ll always have that cave!

Wideo Wednesday “Shatner at his Finest”

You know, Bill Shatner gets a lot of bum raps for his scenery chewing, but I assure you that Trek would have been a LOT less fun without him!  In this famous scene, Kirk fears he’s losing command from the Friendly Angel.   In an otherwise awful episode, this tense moment actually is one of the better moments. Kirk nearly chokes  Spock at the height of his frenzy,  but Spock brings him back ever so gently by just saying “Jim.”  (And yeah, I gotta give both Nimoy and The Shat a lot of credit for not cracking up in that extreme close-up!)  I’m sure there’s those out there who, at this moment,  yell “Just kiss him already!”, but  after years of feeling a little embarrassed by this scene, watching it today reminded me of  the true devotion these two characters have for each other. And you gotta love the exasperated and somewhat “Get Over it!” response Spock gives when Kirk comes to his senses.  That’s true bromance.

Kirk:  I’ve got…command.                                                                                                Spock:  CORRECT, Captain!

Toon Tuesday: 2/19/13 Tribble Party!

tribble partySo much bad news in the world lately, this seemed like a good time for my first attempt at a Trek motivational poster… Apparently Kirk didn’t get the memo that this was NOT Uniform-Optional!

My Weekly Spock 2/18/12 The Primitive Sex Appeal of DR. Spock–Corrected!

As I was going through my Nimoy files of stuff I’ve found on the internet,  I came across this unlikely contender– an old page from a movie magazine, no doubt from the 1960’s, that tries to reason out “The Primitive Sex Appeal of Dr. Spock.”   Well, obviously there are several things horribly WRONG with this article… $(KGrHqNHJCME63(5DhVhBOze)iS7F!~~60_57

First, the photo is backward and the insignia is colored in wrong!

Second, as was typical when Trek first came out, and even after it skyrocketed in syndication… IT’S MISTER SPOCK YOU DOLTS!!!!  No one cares about the primitive sex appeal of  Dr Benjamin Spock ! (Although to their credit, his title is correct in the body of the article).

Third — I found a colorized version of this same article which heinously gave Spock a yellow shirt, the insignia with orange accents!   The hot pink backdrop is colorful, and actually works nicely with the yellow shirt, if a bit Easter egg-y, so I changed that too! (with my apologies tumblr_m9u8aqZ7rA1rt0bqio1_500to the original colorist)

So I had to do the right thing, and dug out my Adobe Photoshop to  re-color this portrait to its correct and deserved tints, flip it,  and fix that age-old typo that non-Trekkie’s were wont to make (I also had to re-write the original body of the article) So here you go:psy sex app spock FINAL

Unfortunately, the last thing wrong with this article is … I can’t find the rest of the article online!   I really would like to know what Dr. Carol Hofburnham of Mulborn University  said about Spock’s primitive sex appeal. but until I can find it, we’ll just have to speculate! Happy Belated Valentine’s Day, kids!

This weeks “Entertainment Weekly”

Hey kids,   I just got this in the mail today, and it seemed appropriate since I (oddly) just had a dream about the new Jim Kirk and the old Mr. Spock last night! Good article.  Can’t wait for the next movie!

FArFri 2/8/13 Uhura Wins! By DK Cissner

Uhura_Wins_by_DKCissnerThis has to be one of my favorite Fan Arts of all time, by creative, whimsical artist DK Cissner on DeviantArt.    Her  caricatures always have such a fun vibe and slightly Disney feel (big eyes and expressions)  I just love how she draws Spock too.  If I could hone my sketch drawing to be as good as hers I’d be very happy!
