Today’s Toon: Awkward Elevator

Sorry, just the way Bill is looking at Leonard here, I couldn’t resist!

#57 Spectre of the Gun

In a most surreal episode, Kirk and Co. find themselves as the Clanton Gang at the O.K. Corral.  A Wanted poster seemed most appropriate here! Get a load of Kirk’s’ hair’! A fairly good episode for season 3, although I found the end a tad contrived. At least it let Scotty and Chekov into the action.

# 56 Assignment: Earth

Ah Gary Seven! One of the few characters who could equal Spock’s coolness in the original series. Loved Teri Garr and Robert Lansing here (and the cat too!)  I’m really sorry this teaser/pilot disguised as a Star Trek episode wasn’t made into a regular series; I think it would have been fun!

I wonder if there is any Gary Seven fan fiction out there?  I think Bryan Cranston would make an excellent Seven in a reboot!

Wideo Wednesday: Star Trek 2nd Pilot Intro – Unaired Version

If you haven’t seen this, it’s pretty neat! Different dialogue for the opening.  Taken from a 16mm print!

#55 The Omega Glory

By the time Season 2 was ending, the series had delved into the ‘commander gone wrong’ scenario twice before (and better) in The Doomsday Machine and Bread and Circuses.   This episode was not only  repetitive, but Captain Tracy was completely unlovable too, whereas Decker and Merrick evoked more sympathy.  If you haven’t seen it, it’s still a fair episode (Spock’s mind link is notable).  I think I hit the key points here without giving too much away.

#53 Patterns of Force

At first I wanted to feature Kirk and Spock in their Nazi uniforms, but I figured it was better to have the novice viewer wonder why they were being interrogated by Nazis. Boy, Kirk sweats a lot!

#49 The Immunity Syndrome

As Star Trek carried on into it’s 2nd season, it began airing more stories set on board to save on it’s paltry limited budget.  Immunity Syndrome was definitely one of the better ones.  For this poster I preserved the ‘amoeba’ used in the original broadcasts.  The new CGI one is okay, but this one seemed more sinister.

FArFri: “Iota IV Incident” by Lei Feiyang

Another fantastic watercolor by artist Lei Feiyang.  Poor Spock!

#48 “Obsession”

Obsession was one of those episodes I didn’t like much as a kid, so whenever I see it, it’s almost been like a new episode for me since I don’t know all the dialogue from heart! Looking back on it now, it’s really a pretty good one, especially in regard to Kirk’s complex emotions here. I included a ”faded” picture of Kirk here from Where No Man has Gone Before to represent him as a younger man.  Ironically, that picture was only taken about a year and a half earlier when Where… was filmed, but Kirk does look astonishingly younger between the two shots.  I added to the illusion of youth and maturity by squeezing the older image to make him look thinner, and slightly stretching the color image from the episode to give him a little bulk.   Young Ensign Garrovick needed no adjustment, as he’s just gorgeous.  🙂

#47 The Gamesters of Triskellion

I love the blue and gold graphics in Gamesters, it seemed a good place to start the artwork.  It would have been easy to make Shahna the center of attention here, (James Bond style) but I liked her better as an accent.  Also Galt has such a marvelous, angular, and imposing Darth Vader-ish form,  that his profile made a perfect focus.
