Toon Tuesday: 2/19/13 Tribble Party!

tribble partySo much bad news in the world lately, this seemed like a good time for my first attempt at a Trek motivational poster… Apparently Kirk didn’t get the memo that this was NOT Uniform-Optional!

My Weekly Spock 2/18/12 The Primitive Sex Appeal of DR. Spock–Corrected!

As I was going through my Nimoy files of stuff I’ve found on the internet,  I came across this unlikely contender– an old page from a movie magazine, no doubt from the 1960’s, that tries to reason out “The Primitive Sex Appeal of Dr. Spock.”   Well, obviously there are several things horribly WRONG with this article… $(KGrHqNHJCME63(5DhVhBOze)iS7F!~~60_57

First, the photo is backward and the insignia is colored in wrong!

Second, as was typical when Trek first came out, and even after it skyrocketed in syndication… IT’S MISTER SPOCK YOU DOLTS!!!!  No one cares about the primitive sex appeal of  Dr Benjamin Spock ! (Although to their credit, his title is correct in the body of the article).

Third — I found a colorized version of this same article which heinously gave Spock a yellow shirt, the insignia with orange accents!   The hot pink backdrop is colorful, and actually works nicely with the yellow shirt, if a bit Easter egg-y, so I changed that too! (with my apologies tumblr_m9u8aqZ7rA1rt0bqio1_500to the original colorist)

So I had to do the right thing, and dug out my Adobe Photoshop to  re-color this portrait to its correct and deserved tints, flip it,  and fix that age-old typo that non-Trekkie’s were wont to make (I also had to re-write the original body of the article) So here you go:psy sex app spock FINAL

Unfortunately, the last thing wrong with this article is … I can’t find the rest of the article online!   I really would like to know what Dr. Carol Hofburnham of Mulborn University  said about Spock’s primitive sex appeal. but until I can find it, we’ll just have to speculate! Happy Belated Valentine’s Day, kids!

Posting soon!

Hey kids, sorry I missed the Weekly Spock, although I do have one planned —  I’ll be posting new stuff here sometime in the next 48 hours, thanks for your patience — Here something to keep my Spockies warm for now:

This weeks “Entertainment Weekly”

Hey kids,   I just got this in the mail today, and it seemed appropriate since I (oddly) just had a dream about the new Jim Kirk and the old Mr. Spock last night! Good article.  Can’t wait for the next movie!

FArFri 2/8/13 Uhura Wins! By DK Cissner

Uhura_Wins_by_DKCissnerThis has to be one of my favorite Fan Arts of all time, by creative, whimsical artist DK Cissner on DeviantArt.    Her  caricatures always have such a fun vibe and slightly Disney feel (big eyes and expressions)  I just love how she draws Spock too.  If I could hone my sketch drawing to be as good as hers I’d be very happy!

The Daily Scrapbook 2/5/13 — March 29, 1978 ‘Starship on a Silver Screen’

Hi Kids, here’s today’s flashback:  From March 29, 1978, the news all Trekkies longed to hear: Star Trek was finally coming back, and now as a movie! Now in my lifetime, there had been many movies turned into TV series, but never vice-versa.   The first Trek movie was a pioneer in this aspect.   I was so happy that Nimoy was back as Spock, and recall being cautiously optimistic about the movie, which turned out to be with good reason.  Despite all the bells and whistles, the first movie to me just wasn’t Star Trek; the uniforms were ugly dull polyester onesies, the Klingons were bumpy,  Shatner’s toupee was all wrong! A tally of offenses abounded in first movie.   There were intensely loving but terribly long and  slo-o-o-o-ow close-ups of the Enterprise.  The splendid music and special effects were loud, but the dialogue was annoyingly whispered.  The plot meant well, but it was executed all wrong! But the worst offense was  that there was hardly any humor in it, (save for McCoy) with the characters so sombre I wondered if Nimoy’s character from Invasion of the Body Snatchers had turned the whole Enterprise crew into pod people!  I was so disappointed with it that I was ready to give up on my beloved series.  Was there anything I liked about the first movie?  Yes. Jerry Goldsmith’s  “Illia’s Theme” was dreamily beautiful, and still gives me chills. Alas, even the love story between she and Decker wasn’t utilized as well as it could have been.  I give Roddenberry and crew points for trying,  but unfortunately, it would be  three years until the second movie‘s glory made up for the first ones dearth of spirit (in spades!)                By the way — this was the final article posted in my original scrapbook– a fitting end to five years of clippings up to this point. Volume II will start tomorrow (there are four volumes in all).  Thanks for coming along for the ride so far! V1-pg 71 copy

The Daily Scrapbook 2/4/13– February 1978: Dean and Nimoy: Why Cults?

Here’s today’s flashback:  The writer of this New Jersey paper’s article asks,  “Dean and Nimoy; Why cults?”  Let’s see…Talent, Charm, incredibly hot…

But seriously, he makes a good point about how certain elements of pop culture deeply and emotionally affect people.  V1-pg 68 complete

My Weekly Spock: 2/4/13 Nimoy gets Bilbo’ed

Here’s your Nimoy fix for the week.  I’d say this was the nadir of his career, but that honor goes to the Saturday Morning Commercial he did for NBC in 1978 ‘C’mon Saturday!’   But I gotta give the man credit. It takes guts to do this!   I confess, to this day, I have only seen snippets if this video, usually referenced on comedy shows.   But for me it’s just too embarrassing to watch, although I think I could handle these stills.  In 1967, Nimoy lip-synched his song of  The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins on the short lived 60’s  variety show “Malibu U”.  Surprisingly, Nimoy did several Variety shows during his career, this one being the most notorious!  However, the big button that asks “What’s a Leonard Nimoy?” is funny, and I bet the then mid-30 something Nimoy got a kick out of all these 60’s go-go girls dancing around him!  (Although that big hobbit foot is creeeeeepy!  Yet, somehow this is easier to listen to than any Shatner soliloquy!

I wonder if Nimoy’s seen all LOTR Trilogy and the recent Hobbit?
