So Long Old Chum: Adam West 1928 -2017

I realize it’s been a little while now, but I had to do a little tribute to  actor Adam West, who as you know passed away on June 9th.  Adam’s Batman was to all his fans what Spock was to Trekkers; a beloved character, an inspiration, and an overall a hero.  I loved Adam West’s voice, and how he made Batman a lovable hero, (if a bit goofy).   Of course the 1966 TV show was pure parody, but  it was a tonic the country needed from seeing the horror of Vietnam on the nightly news.

As Batman  came out the same year as Star Trek, my initial memories of it as a 5-year old were a bit sketchy. I recall watching it with my family at the “Same Bat-time, same Bat-channel!” every week.  In fact, Batman was so popular, it aired twice a week at one point!  I remember I loved the animated opening, because any  child could not resist a cartoon!  I recall having a crush on Burt Ward (a.k.a. Robin) because he was the cool teenager, and being a bit creeped out by The Joker.   It was funny when the dynamic duo would climb up the buildings, and we all wondered why The Joker had a mustache under his makeup! (Cesar Romero refused to shave his trademark lip fuzz).  We all thought it was pretty silly and never took it as seriously as Trek but it sure was fun escapism.

As I grew older and saw it in reruns, I remember finding it a bit embarrassing to watch (Bat-Tusi anyone?) but I did begin to appreciate the tongue-in-cheek atmosphere of the whole thing, and West really knew how to play it up!  I only wish Batman could have married Catwoman!  It appears that West agreed with me, when asked what Batman story he’d write:

“My Bruce Wayne would have been romancing Catwoman with a brandy snifter full of milk. Then he would have said something silly, like “Man cannot live on milk alone.”

After Batman, West had trouble getting roles because of the typecasting Batman gave him, but he remained optimistic:

“I can’t tell you how grateful I am to those fans. They are not stupid. I think they appreciate my sincerity and my work. Actors want to be loved. Batman (1966) has done that for me. I have an audience out there which is always waiting to see whatever I do. And new generations are constantly discovering me in reruns. So, as long as I stay sharp, good things can still happen for me. Meanwhile, I keep hoping that a wonderful opportunity will come along. Believe me, my life ain’t so bad, after all.”

And eventually, he found many a role after Batman, and had rarely been out of work right up to his passing last month.  He also remained remarkably young-looking, even as he struggled with leukemia at the end.

Before Batman, West even had a Star Trek connection!  He and Bill Shatner appeared in the short-lived series-turned TV Movie Alexander the Great with Shatner in the lead and West as Cleander. Here’s the whole movie!

On June  16th the city of Los Angeles beamed the Bat Signal onto city hall.  I can’t imagine a better tribute to this beloved actor. ❤ Rest in Peace.

My Weekly Spock: Siblings!

This past Monday (4/10) was National Siblings Day, so what better time to remember wee Leonard and his big brother Melvin?

Not to mention those two men who loved him like a brother; Bill Shatner and DeForest Kelley ❤

Happy 86th Birthday Bill Shatner!

Hey Captain! Our Captain hits 86 today!  Happy Birthday Bill! God bless you with another beautiful year and many many more!

BTW, Guess who I got my picture taken with last June at Star Trek: Mission New York?  — I was wearing my Dr. Miranda Jones costume and had Bill hold a faux red rose with me, just like in the episode!  (Silly me!) He looks perfectly flummoxed here, but it was totally worth it!

I’ll write more about my convention experiences from last year soon; very busy lately with my two jobs and also rehearsing for local production of Jesus Christ Superstar!

Steady As She Goes! Shatner, Koenig, and Takei on the Bridge Again!

This is all kinds of wonderful.  Just a few days ago at the the Destination: Star Trek Convention in Birmingham, England, the stars the many Trek incarnations as well as special guests posed on a lovely recreation of the Enterprise bridge! But most importantly, Captain Kirk, Mr. Chekov and Mr. Sulu were back at their stations!

This picture got me a little emotional!  Seeing William Shatner, Walter Koenig and George Takei sitting so fine just made my heart swell (and break just a little)!  Unfortunately, Nichelle Nichols couldn’t make it, but I’m sure she was there in spirit.  And as beautiful as this is, it made me miss the crew now watching from above: Leonard Nimoy, Deforest Kelley, James Doohan, Majel Barrett, and Grace Lee Whitney  ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

Fortunately, the legendary three here had plenty of support in their Trek family.  Most notable is Leonard’s son,  Adam Nimoy, standing in for his beloved father.  As much as I wish that Leonard was still here, I’m so thankful that Adam was there for him.

I also LOVE that George Takei wore a black shirt with a bright yellow sweater, mimicking his original uniform, and look how proudly his sits back at his helm! Steady as she goes!

Now enjoy this moment of Star Trek Awesomeness!

Happy 50th Star Trek! (My Tribute Poster!)

Sorry this is a day late, but it is no less sincere!  It took longer than I imagined,   probably from colorizing the uniforms!)   For this celebration, everyone’s a captain! And special halos for our beloveds watching from above ❤

What a dull world it would have been without Star Trek.  Aren’t we lucky? Thanks to all who made and make this dream come true, and may the message of Trek’s human harmony Live Long and Prosper!  Love, Therese xo50

My Weekly Spock: That First Trek:TMP Press Conference (1978) (Gallery)

136740475And the band got back together! As the latest Trek movie was released the other week, I thought it would be fun to look back on the first press conference for the movie that started the series way back in March of 1978.  Here’s Leonard and company looking splendid on that happy day.  He looks so genuinely thrilled at this impromptu nearly-10 year reunion! Love that velvet blazer! Bless them All!

Video — 1979 Star Trek TMP Premiere!

A fair quality video with lots of good stuff here – Gorgeous Leonard Nimoy appears @ 8:00 (and a bit later) — poor Sandra looks terrified through most of this.  Poor woman, I think she never got used to the publicity. (a fan gives Leonard a gift)  Great to see our old friends here — Dig Majel Barret’s ‘spiderweb neckline!  And Sweet De Kelley!

Happy 85th Birthday William Shatner!

Happy Birthday Bill! Have Fun and LLAP! – I’d scream if I was 85 too!              Love, Therese  🙂

Happy 85 Bill

Not Gonna Buy Bill’s Book…But…

William Shatner’s latest book, Leonard: My 50 Year Friendship with a Remarkable Man, will be released on February 16th, just a week and a half shy of the one year anniversary of Nimoy’s death.  Surely this is an excellent marketing move by Shatner’s publisher, as Nimoy’s fans will be thinking of him as the anniversary approaches.

Yet I am reluctant to buy this book.  I’ve read a few excerpts on Amazon.com, and there is some good, thoughtful writing in it as Bill , with help from David Fisher, recalls his half century of friendship with his co-star.  I have no doubt that Bill loved his friend, and that Leonard loved him.  We can see how they related through their similar religious and cultural backgrounds, and they were there for each other through good and bad.

Sadly, the takeaway from early reviews is the revelation that Leonard Nimoy “froze him out” from their friendship in the last few months of his life; only relating to Shatner on business matters concerning Star Trek.  If this is true, it’s a tragic development. Unfortunately, Nimoy is not here to tell his side of the story, and we, as well as Shatner, are left to wonder Why?  It’s a biting frustration that Shatner will have to live with, and it is a blow to all of our us who imagined that these two men were as devoted to each other as their iconic characters were.  I hope Shatner will find solace in memories of the good times of their friendship.

But this revelation, and the fact that this book comes out so relatively soon after Nimoy’s passing, makes one wonder about Shatner’s motives here. Is it a true tribute to his friend or a quick money grab to bring Bill and his storied ego back into the spotlight?  I truly hope it’s the former.

I won’t be buying the book, but I’ll be content to wait for it to come to the local library.  And I give Shatner credit for baring his soul and his heartbreak over the loss of his friend, as well as for still having so many irons in the fire at age 84. (He’s even reconsidering playing Kirk again!) I wish him good health and happiness.  If all the proceeds from this book went to charity, I’d snap it up,   but for now,  I think I’ve sent enough cash his way.   Good Luck, Bill.
