Here’s your Nimoy fix for the week. I’d say this was the nadir of his career, but that honor goes to the Saturday Morning Commercial he did for NBC in 1978 ‘C’mon Saturday!’ But I gotta give the man credit. It takes guts to do this! I confess, to this day, I have only seen snippets if this video, usually referenced on comedy shows. But for me it’s just too embarrassing to watch, although I think I could handle these stills. In 1967, Nimoy lip-synched his song of The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins on the short lived 60’s variety show “Malibu U”. Surprisingly, Nimoy did several Variety shows during his career, this one being the most notorious! However, the big button that asks “What’s a Leonard Nimoy?” is funny, and I bet the then mid-30 something Nimoy got a kick out of all these 60’s go-go girls dancing around him! (Although that big hobbit foot is creeeeeepy! Yet, somehow this is easier to listen to than any Shatner soliloquy!
I wonder if Nimoy’s seen all LOTR Trilogy and the recent Hobbit?

Here’s today’s flashback — From February of 1978, a very exciting time for me as I waited with baited breath for my trip to Elmira (40 minutes away) to see, live and in person, Leonard Nimoy. This 16 year old was so excited, she wrote two (really crappy) limericks! More on this event soon!

It ain’t Santa! But in January of 1978 I got a late Christmas present when it was announced that not one but TWO celebrities connected to Star Trek would be appearing locally! Gene Roddenberry was coming to our local Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena, promoting The World of Star Trek (basically the same show I saw in Rochester that past August), and LEONARD NIMOY would be coming to nearby Elmira!!! Unfortunately both of these events fell on the same night: February 18th. But which to go to? Well, if you’re like me, and I know I am, the choice was obvious; Vulcan’s beat Great Birds of the Galaxy every time! I will post about this unforgettable event next week, so stay tuned!
However, in other news, the long awaited Star Trek II TV series return was permanently canceled by Paramount TV, no new series, no bald lady. The headline read “Sorry Trekkies”, but I felt a strange sigh of relief. Looking back now we did tons better with the movie series than we ever could have with a re-booted Trek. And the movies led to more TV series, so it was a double win for the fans. There’s also a portion of an article here mentioning Nimoy in “In Search Of.” The producer, Alan Lansbury, describes Nimoy as “a persuasive identity” I couldn’t agree more. By the way, have you noticed how many times in these scrapbook pieces I’d have to fix Spock title from “Dr.” to ‘Mr.”? Pure carelessness (or ignorance) on the writer’s part)

Here’s today’s flashback: From the TV Star Parade, an article from February 1978, an article touting the new Star Trek TV series (we all know now this version never happened, which I suspect was a small blessing! Note how the mask of Kirk next to Roddenberry is similar (if not the same one) used by ‘Jason’ in those silly slasher movies.

Here’s today’s flashback: From 1977, it’s amazing that show canceled eight years prior was now syndication gold! 
Who’d a thunk it? Certainly not Roddenberry! Also a few notes from the last few times Nimoy was in Equus, the space shuttle Enterprise has a successful third test drive, and talk of a possible ‘fourth network’ on television (for you youngsters, back in 1977, there were only THREE major commercial networks in America, ABC, CBS, and NBC). I remember thinking at the time that a fourth network wouldn’t happen, and I had further doubts that Trek would come back as a TV series. Of course, more commercial networks would pop up, but not for a good 18 years (remember UPN?).

Here’s some videos of the famous week of appearances by William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy on Dick Clark’s $20,000 Pyramid in 1977! (I’m guessing the Pyramid amount doubled for inflation!)
As I mentioned in today’s Daily Scrapbook, Nimoy was a great player and had played this several times, Bill was…well, Bill, and he famously throws a chair at one point! I’m very grateful to the videographer Hondo, who resuscitated these. The quality isn’t great, but they’re still enjoyable!
Warning, Shatner wears some eye-scarring 70’s qiana shirts! Nimoy is ever cool, of course 😉 The first clip begins with a flashback of Nimoy hugging an ecstatic contestant 🙂
An analysis about why Shatner’s 70’s show The Barbary Coast failed –probably because it was an awful show? (It basically was a 70’s version of The Wild Wild West, with Shatner in the Artemis Gordon-style role) Also a mention of that British import Space 1999, and TV listings of Nimoy’s movie The Alpha Caper, and the crazy week when William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy appeared opposite each other on Dick Clark’s $20,ooo Pyramid! Those appearances were pretty funny; at one point they pitted Shatner against himself at the pyramid, and amazingly, he LOST! I remember he was sitting there giving clues to an empty chair and Clark had to yell out something like “Switch seats, you dope!”
Why did Shatner and Nimoy do this? I’m guessing they needed the money, but it looks like they really enjoyed it -(Nimoy played to win and was especially good!) Just came across these on eBay — original photos and negatives of Mr. Nimoy (and then-wife Sandy) in 1972 campaigning for the late George McGovern (wow!) Nimoy was (and is) always of strongly aware of his civic duty. Personally, I think he’d make an excellent president (or at least adviser)! Be sure to vote tomorrow –it’s the only logical thing to do!

From The New York Times in 1977, here’s a nice, long interview with Nimoy in his rented Manhattan apartment, talking about Equus, Star Trek, and being prescient about what roles he will play (He knew he’ play Dysart, he knew he’d play Sherlock Holmes). At this point, he was heavily lobbying to play the vampire Lestat in ‘Interview with the Vampire‘ that Paramout had just bought.
I don’t think he foresaw that it wouldn’t be made until 1993 and that Tom Cruise would get the part — I wonder if it would have been better if it had been made in the late 70s or early 80’s with Nimoy in the role. We can only imagine.
