FArFri — “Nimoy- Star” by tafafa

As long as we’re in the 70’s groove this week here’s some serious funk-a riffic art by artist tafafa on Deviant art. Tafa LOVES to paint Nimoy in all the phases of his life, check out her stuff! Dig those bell bottoms!  Hmmm, wonder what he’s singing?

My Weekly Spock: The Patchwork Suit!!! (Nimoy on Mike Douglas-Video)

Hey Kids,

Having a crazy busy week prepping for Christmas!  So many projects to finish! I’ll post a bit more next week, but for now, here’s some truly funk-a-delic Nimoy from 1974, in his memorable appearance on The Mike Douglas Show!

Thrilled someone posted this, although I know there’s more than this! I’ve been looking for images of this incredible, phenomenal,  denim patchwork suit, and you got to give the guy credit for pushing the fashion envelope!  (He could fly away in those lapels!) –Next week I’ll post some stills!

Anyone remember Mason Reese? He was an advertising sensation in the early 70’s for his quirky looks and voice.  So much so that he got a whole week as ‘co-host’ on the Mike Douglas talk show.  Man, I remember watching this when it first came on (my Mom watched it every day).  A shame Douglas didn’t have Nimoy as his co-host for a week, (although he did guest several times) Nimoy’s so sweet to his little fan here, saying:  “We’ll take you on a trip on the Enterprise” Oh man, did I envy Mason here!

So as an early Christmas Present, Here’s your deliciousness for today!

My Weekly Spock — From 1954: Nimoy on Dragnet

Daaaah- Da- Dum-Dum.     Daaaah- Da- Dum-Dum -DAAAAAAAAH!

Yup, anyone over 35 should recognize those famous opening bars from the great old Jack Webb series Dragnet.  (God, I’m old!) Many a young future star would be cast as that weeks latest juvenile delinquent, and Nimoy was no exception.  So without further adieu, here’s “Just the Facts, Ma’am”…

Last week we had some vintage stills from Nimoy’s appearance on Highway Patrol, this week he’s still on the wrong side of the law as young punk Julius Carver on the episode “The Big Boys” — note the goofy mustache!  Here he is with his co-conspirator in the famous ‘line-up’ pictures seen at the end of each episode!  Nimoy later appeared on Dragnet again in 1959, but I’m still looking for that one.

With all the ‘heavy’ roles he had to play, is it any wonder Nimoy was pleased to play Spock; a character his “mother could be proud of”! IMG_7803

My Weekly Spock -Autumn in Paris

Been a while since we’ve been to ‘Paris’ eh?  So serious and intense! (and always fine in a uniform)

My Weekly Spock (@1966) Forty Questions for Mr. Spock

Here’s a fine slice of nostalgia!  I found this on Tumblr — it’s an incredible, personal and very long interview from Mr. Nimoy in 1966, where he answers 40 questions from a movie magazine.  Love the opening shot if Nimoy talking into a state-of-the-art tape recorder (not so thrilled with the cigarette shot, but  everyone smoked in the 60’s)  Great insight into the 35 year old Nimoy’s mind! I wonder how much holds true today?

The Daily Scrapbook “Leonard Nimoy- At Last, He’s a Man!

Here’s today’s flashback:  From a movie magazine in the early 70’s, this article declares that Nimoy is at last a man!.  No, it’s not about his Bar Mitzvah some 30 years earlier, but rather how he’s finally playing a human male in Mission Impossible! Yet despite it’s praise for Nimoy’s achievements, the actor was never far from the shadow of Mr. Spock.  I have to admit though, I’ve never thought of Mr. Spock as having ‘green skin’ (it was more just pale with a touch of green cast!)  The snotty caption under the publicity picture doesn’t help!  One has no doubt than Nimoy was all man to begin with!

The Daily Scrapbook “Spock: Teenage Outcast”

Here’s today’s flashback:  From teen magazine FaVE in the 1960’s, Nimoy explains how Spock was a teenage outcast, and addresses the stigma of being bi-racial.  A good lesson in self worth! (And a great gesture by Nimoy) I bet a lot of kids appreciated this.

My Weekly Spock: Singing Nimoy

There was a strange compulsion in the era of 60s and 70s AM radio to make singing stars out of celebrities not known for singing.  Richard Chamberlain, Noel Harrison, William Shatner,Telly Savalas and of course, Leonard Nimoy, all fell into this camp. (Chamberlain actually wasn’t too bad).   I never became aware of Nimoy’s vocal contributions until I joined the LNAF in the 1970’s, and I remember actually buying a couple of his albums for fun.  Yet I couldn’t actually bring myself to listen to them.  Rhino Records compiled many of these recordings into their “Golden Throats” collection; it’s the type of stuff you’d hear on NPR’s Annoying Music Show.

Now to be fair, Nimoy did do a few musicals in the 70’s (Camelot, The King and I, and My Fair Lady) but alas, I’d rather hear his speaking voice on vinyl!  Here’s some covers:

A little travel note…

Hey Kids,  I’ll be taking a quick one-day trip to NYC tomorrow, to a VERY exciting event that I’m sure I’ll have a full report to you about next week.  I think this will help bring me back a little bit more and connect to the world again. Lets just say, I’ll be getting some ‘Spock Therapy’ in real life!  See you Monday! -Therese

The Daily Scrapbook 5/17/13 -Planetariums, Trek, and Vincent.

Here’s today’s flashback:  A planetarium program a relative sent me from Rochester – notable because Leonard Nimoy narrates one of the shows (highlighted).  (With that rich voice and “alien” background, Nimoy did a lot of voice work, usually for something related to space or mystery)   A mention of In Search Of… meeting Vincent Van Gogh, and a snippet mentioning how Star Trek is still popular in it’s common syndicated time-slot of 6-7p.m. (My mom hated me bringing my dinner into the living room to watch Trek (ah, the days before DVRs!)
