My Weekly Spock: Leonard Nimoy on the Carol Burnett Show in 1970.

Hi Everybody!   For Christmas last month,  I was delighted to receive the DVD set of The Carol Burnett Show, The Lost Episodes.  I was excited to know I’d be seeing the episodes from 1967-72 that never made it to syndication!  I was especially hoping to see the skit that went along with this famous still from Episode 12, Dec 4,1967 of Carol looking shocked as Leonard Nimoy (as Mr. Spock) appears in ‘Mrs. Invisible Man5oibo1.jpg.397c9a30c48867fae58c83484e55c8ab

Turns out, although the DVD set has many episodes, it is not a compilation of the 1st 5 seasons.  Instead are episodes hand-picked by Carol, packaged by TimeLife.com and issued piecemeal.   I only received the first 6- disc collection, and this episode alas, was not there. (Nor is it within the second ‘lost episode’ set).

However, there is a silver lining in this set! Leonard Nimoy does appear!  On the final disc, (Episode 316 from January 19, 1970) Nimoy appears as Paris from Mission: Impossible with Peter Graves, Greg Morris, and Peter Lupus in a surprise appearance at the end of a satirical Mission: Impossible skit!  I’ve included screencaps here for your viewing pleasure!  Carol gushes about M:I and gives a kiss to Peter Graves, and Leonard plants a sweet kiss on Carol too as he is clearly delighted to be there!  They all crack up as guest star Flip Wilson (as Geraldine Jones), cozies up to Greg Morris! Nimoy would later appear on Flip Wilson’s variety show.

Here’s hoping Carol will release the Spock episode too (but not holding my breath for it!)

My Weekly Spock: Love Comes in All Colors

In 1970, the National Urban Coalition created a public service message and a print ad with the words “Love Comes In All Colors”.   Leonard Nimoy participated in both of these messages, and if you look closely at the video, you can see him in  among the many celebrities and the cast of Hair singing Let the Sun Shine In (at :29 and at :36) He’s wearing a light plaid jacket and light green turtleneck.

In the early 70’s in a time of war, many truly believed we could change the world with love.  It’s an enduring message that is more profound now than ever. As we say farewell to 2015 and to Leonard Nimoy, I only wish that the spirit of love and brotherhood will still endure in our frenzied and terribly divisive culture.Wishing you love and peace in the new year.

Leonard is in the third row down from the top, far left.

My Weekly Spock: This Was a Happy Man

Reviewing pictures of Leonard — This was a happy man.  I mean, sure, we all have problems and can’t be happy all the time, but so often you can see the genuine joy Leonard possessed in many candids and portraits.

Joy at a personal appearance

He clearly  loved his work, his family, his fans, and his life.  His smile was infectious and images of him laughing or smiling always bring me joy!

Nimoy Interview in Films In Review (1984)

A good friend of mine gave me some of her old Films in Review magazines and to my delight, I found this interview with Leonard Nimoy in one of the issues!  He discusses directing Star Trek III and almost gives away the ending!   Alas, the only picture they use her is Nimoy in 1/4 profile, but it’s a good interview and insight into an early directing experience for the actor.  (btw, Films in Review actually blasted the movie in the August ’84 edition, review STIII August 84 (see here)  but at least they gave Nimoy a chance to talk nicely about it in the November issue.

My Weekly Spock – Nimoy on 87th Precinct: The Very Hard Sell

Here’s some great production pics of Leonard with actress Charlene Whitman  as guests on the series 87th Precinct.   He played a mysterious murderer/con artist Barrow and she was his conflicted girlfriend, Stella,  in the episode The Very Hard Sell.  (1961)  He’s both a jerk and a charmer here.  Note: Nimoy doesn’t appear until @ 2/3rds into the episode, but he’s worth every minute.

The star of the show was none other than Robert Lansing as Detective Steve Carella, who would later play Gary Seven in Assignment: Earth.  Does the detective get his man?  You can see all of The Very Hard Sell  here.

My Weekly Spock- Young, Younger, Youngest, and just So Young!

Here’s some wonderful portraits of young Leonard I had never seen before — so young!  You can imagine the dreams of success in his young mind. These all appear to be taken in his early to mid 20’s, but in the bottom two he looks barely out of his teens!   Glad these were taken!

My Weekly Spock: Barnabas Nimoy?

Sorry I’m a little late today — very busy at work!

In one of his last photo shoots, Leonard Nimoy posed in this very dramatic, kind of spooky pose (Those glowing eyes!!)  I think he would have made an excellent vampire- like Barnabas Collins from Dark Shadows!  It’s a a really incredible portrait.  Does anyone know if there’s more from this sitting?

Leonard’s Helmet in my Backyard!

The Bundy Museum in Binghamton, NY has a permanent display to local and national legend Rod Serling.  Now as many of you know, Serling created, wrote for,  and produced the marvelous Twilight Zone.  The reason Bundy has this exhibit is because Serling, although born in Ithaca NY, grew up in Binghamton from the age of two.  Life in Binghamton inspired many of the Twilight Zone‘s stories (Walking Distance in particular) and he’s long been our local hero.

Well here’s some exciting news — as Trekkies know, Leonard Nimoy appeared in the classic TZ episode A Quality of Mercy.  Leonard’s face is the first thing you see in the episode, as his character is sending field reports on his walkie-talkie during a Pacific WWII battle.  Imagine my surprise when I read this article in our local paper the other day — Leonard’s helmet has now become part of the permanent Serling display at The Bundy!   I want to thank the 8 Serling fans who pooled their resources to buy the helmet, I can’t wait to see it!

Binghamton  is just a stone’s throw away from me, so it’s nice to know that a little bit of Leonard’s legacy is now practically in my backyard!   I’ll post again as soon as I see it!
