The Daily Scrapbook 3/7/13 — July 11.1978, ‘A Galaxy of Gastronomic Goodies’

Here’s today’s flashback:  From July 11, 1978 “Star Trek: A Galaxy of Gastronomic Goodies”.   These excerpts from a Star Trek cookbook were posted in our weekly Food section. Mind you, this was in the dark pre-internet days when our two local newspapers had money and space to print entire sections dedicated to frivolous things like Food, and Lifestyle, something never done anymore. (they’re lucky to still have a small Sunday berth).  And someone in the culinary field figured out how to make a quick buck by slapping the Star Trek name on not-too-other worldly dishes.  Entitled The Official Star Trek Cooking Manual,  the authors claim that the recipes were written by Nurse Chapel herself, and creates Vulcan and Klingon delicacies, as well as some uniform- expanding corn pudding for Captain Kirk.  Since many newspapers were owned by Gannet, a similar article appeared in my Aunt’s New Jersey Food section for Romulan Cookies that she sent me around the same time, added below. Although cleverly created, I wonder if some of these don’t make a good case for food replicators –Fruit and Meat Soup?  😛 V2-010 complete V2-010 Romulan recipe

The Daily Scrapbook 3/6/13 — (1978) Postcards from from the edge…of Trekdom

Here’s today’s flashback: from 1978, some Nimoy-centric Trek postcards. I honestly don’t know where I acquired these, but I was happy to have them at the time.  I typed little captions just in case there was anyone in the 1970’s who didn’t know who Mr. Spock was.    By the way, I always liked the  Roman soldier bust in the center card — it was used in several episodes, and I wish I could find one like it.  I suspect it was a common decorative home piece.  No luck on eBay yet – any ideas where it came from?V2-09D1 V2-09D2

The Daily Scrapbook 3/5/13–Toni was There!

Here’s today’s flashback: Another recap article about the ST:TMP Press Conference., and this time “TONI WAS THERE!”.   I have no idea who Toni was, but she was definitely THERE!  I do love the old publicity picture on Page One though, with Mr. Kyle (John Winston) sniggering in the corner.  On the final page here is the remainder of the article, along with more  snippets and bits of other articles. Nimoy mentions the riskiest thing he’s ever done.  On the final page here is the remainder of the article, along with more  snippets and bits of other articles. Toon Tuesday 3/5/13 The ABSOLUTE FINAL FINAL 430!

Okay kids, you’ve seen this twice already, but darned if every time I posted this, I’d find another notable crew member.  So at this time, I am very pleased to announce that this is the final Final FINAL version of my design “Lets Hear it for the 430”!   I added more room to the top and added the saucer head of the Enterprise to hold all these people in.  Really, this is it. Done, Finished, Kaput! Making this drove me a little crazy, but it was worth it. Why should the top two always get all the credit? 😉  Be sure to click on image to get the full details.

(A Key will be up soon so you can identify most of them)    Thank you and good night.

The Daily Scrapbook 3/4/13 ‘On the Set of Invasion of the Body Snatchers’

Here’s today’s flashback:  From Starlog Magazine, May 1978, a look behind the scenes on location for the remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers with director Phillip Kaufman, Donald Sutherland, Kevin McCarthy and Leonard Nimoy.   Up to this point I had never seen the original Invasion… and would not see it until those things called VCR’s were more common, but once I saw the original it became one of my fave sci-fi films of all time.  I thought this version was very well done too, (and definitely more terrifying) but I haven’t seen in in a ages. I’ll have to rent it sometime.  V2-06

My Weekly Spock 3/4/13 That Eyebrow!

As a kid I used to marvel at how Mr. Spock could raise just one eyebrow- and I practiced until I could (sort of ) raise my right one –mostly by pushing my left one down.   But Nimoy does this with ease, and incorporated it into a surprise reaction from not only Spock, but several other characters as well, making it one of his trademarks.  It’s a wonder that right eyebrow didn’t climb straight off his forehead!

The Daily Scrapbook 3/1/13 Star Trek Report from Starlog Magazine

Here’s today’s flashback:  From March of 1978, the official confirmation article form the beloved Starlog Magazine (the ultimate geek periodical of the time giving us the final rundown of the press conference for the upcoming Star Trek: The Motion Picture. (that was an awful title, wasn’t it?  They should have called it V’Ger Unleashed or something else!)  Anyway, Nimoy explains here that his long awaited casting as Spock was delayed because the communication “between Paramount and Vulcan was very slow”  😉 , and Shatner, when asked it if will be hard to recreate Kirk after 9 years, paraphrases the great Spencer Tracy* “You take a deep breath and say the words.”

Trekkies could always rely on Starlog to bring them the latest news.  This piece was written by Susan Sackett, a writer and associate to Gene Roddenberry well known to Trek fans (I think I have a letter from her someplace).

The Daily Scrapbook:2/28/13 — May1978– See You in the Funny Papers –A Trek Newspaper Comic!

Here’s Today’s Flashback: From May of 1978, an article about the upcoming  Star Trek daily newspaper comic by Mandala productions, the same company that had produced (in an era before widespread videos)  the 12 “Fotonovels” of the original Star Trek series.   I actually owned all 12 Fotonovels (the most dog-eared being the ‘All Our Yesterdays’ volume) but sold them a few years ago on eBay.   Anyway, I can’t recall if our local paper got the original series Star Trek Comic, but we did get one based on the 1st movie.
Also keeping in the ‘funny’ range, another “Grin and Bear It” Sunday comic dealing with female astronauts, and a clipping from who knows where detailing some scenes from the famous Star Trek Blooper reels.  (I always liked to keep my scrapbook pages along theme lines).
