Enterprise Over Manhattan!

I am so happy to share with all of you these gorgeous pictures of the shuttle Enterprise soaring over Manhattan today, April 27, 2012.  These just put a lump of pride in my throat!  I’m definitely going to take my sons to see this when it goes on permanent display at The Intrepid Air and Space Museum in NYC!  And Mr. Nimoy got to see it in person today too! (yes, he’s here too) I’m so happy for him, NYC, and NASA!  This must have been a thrill for him. Lucky Duck!  Enjoy these breath-taling photos! Click on image for bigger size.

Welcome Home Enterprise!

I’m just watching CNN now, and I hope you’ve caught this too.  The original prototype shuttle Enterprise is swooping around NYC to land at JFK soon and prepere for  it’s final home  at the Intrepid Museum.  So exciting for NYC and NASA!   I remember when the  Enterprise was unveiled in 1976, it was originally to be called The Constitution, but Trek fans all over the country wrote NASA and inisited that they name this prototype after their favorive Starship!   On CNN now John Cerrella joking referred to it as ‘The Rodney Dangerfield” of Shuttles, because it did’t get to fly into space, hence ‘getting no respect’, but it’s safe to say that without this prototype which was used for practice landings, our shuttle program may have never happened!

Certainly The Enterprise  is getting that respect now!  Nimoy Alert:  I’ve heard several commentators say that Mr. Nimoy is going to speak today at JFK – I hope so !  Nimoy was a the first roll-out of The Enterprise in 1976 along with Dee, Jim, Nichelle, George, Walter, and Gene Roddenberry.  I’m so glad he’s there today!   I remember the roll-out well!  Several of the Trek  men were wearing awful leisure suits! (save for Nimoy and Takei)  But it was so exciting! Nimoy at the time was surprised that it wasn’t the Star-Spangled Banner playing at the roll out, but rather the original  Star Trek Theme!

The Star Trek Cast welcome the newly christened NASA Shuttle Enterprise in 1976. L-R NASA Employee, DeForrest Kelly, George Takei, James Doohan (partly hidden, w/beard) Nichelle Nichols, Leonard Nimoy, Gene Roddenberry, NASA employee, and Walter Koenig.

The best thing about Enterprise coming to NYC is that it is in such beautiful condition because it doesn’t have any space-wear on it, no loose or missing tiles.   It will be a beautiful addition to the Intrepid Museum when it opens in July!   I’ll keep you updated when Nimoy speaks today!

Heard in Passing…

Tonight I was out for a walk with my  mid-teenage son, and we were coming upon what appeared to be a sweet family scene.  In a half-moon street with a  round patch of grass at its center, a family of five playing kickball. The Dad was pitching, two sons at first & second and their daughter (about 6) at third. The Mom was complaining about the Dad’s pitches, saying that they weren’t centered.  The Dad kept saying “I spunning it, I spunning it!” (Interesting grammar, there).  No matter, they were having fun, and it was good to see a family out playing on a weeknight.

Then just as we were passing, the Mom  kicked the ball between  second and third,  the kids went running and the Dad caught the Mom as she headed for 1st.

She shouted “That’s interference!  F*** YOU!”

So much for the early  Spring idyll.

Now, I truly appreciate her frustration over the moment, but  it saddens me that ‘F’-Bombs’ have become so common in public language, especially parents in front of their kids.  What a horrible example.   I’m not asking people to stop swearing*, but I only wish that people would remember their environment when they have the urge to curse. Especially in public.  Will mankind ever outgrow swearing? Probably not. But I truly hope we won’t outgrow courtesy.

*It actually helps when you injure yourself to use real swear words

Happy 200th Birthday, Charles Dickens!

Today, February 7, 2012, is the 200th Birthday of Charles Dickens!  If you’ve never read a Dickens book, you have lost out on a great adventure into the human soul.  I’m sure you’re aware of  these gems:

Great Expectations

A Christmas Carol

Oliver Twist

David Copperfield

A Tale of  Two Cities  (Which Spock gave to Kirk in Star Trek II)

The Pickwick Papers

The Adventures of Nicholas Nickelby

And so on and so on.  You know what my  favorite Dickens quote is?   This:

“No space of regret can make amends for one life’s opportunity misused”               – The Ghost of Jacob Marley, Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol

Don’t misuse your life — get off the computer, buy some Dickens, and broaden your horizons as well as your vocabulary!

BTW, Mr. Nimoy played the leader of the street urchins, Fagin, in a Theater production  of Oliver! in 1972-3 — One of his first Theater Musicals!

The Joy of McCoy Part 1

Back in 1976, I had the pleasure of attending the ‘Star Trek BiCentennial-10 Convention in New York City.  It was my first trip to NYC, and at the tender age of 15, it was an eye-opening, exciting time.  The Convention was considered the premiere Trek event of that time, and all of the original cast were to show up (except Nimoy and Barret, who had other commitments-dang!).  I was so excited to be going to an event where I’d find other fans like myself.

One highlight was when dear Deforest Kelley came out for an hour to talk with the fans and take questions.  “Dee entered to the thunderous applause of at least 3-400 screaming Trekkies in the auditorium of the Statler Hilton.  “Dee” was wonderful and homey, like the sweet, fun uncle you wanted to spent all day with.  As I recall, he was dressed in black flared polyester slacks and a black polyester double-knit shirt with a loud orange and white design (Oh the Seventies!).

De told several stories about acting and Trek, and when asked his favorite episodes of the series, he mentioned two or three (I honestly can’t remember which ones) but then said “And, of course, The World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky…(more thunderous applause) because I finally got the girl!”

But the memory I mostly take away from this was  De’s story about how he and his wife lost their pet bird out of a window in NYC once. It was a heart-warming story and I wish to heck I could remember all the details, but it boiled down to the city dwellers down below managing to eventually get the bird back to De and his wife Carolyn.  I’m trying to find a mention of it somewhere on the ‘net, but so far the only site that had it no longer exists 😦 .  If anyone finds a link to it, please let me know!

Later we went to a scheduled autograph session with De and Grace Lee Whitney.  Unfortunately, I got there too soon, and De hadn’t come in yet.  Well, Grace was sweet and I still have her wonderful autograph, but I wish the convention management let me stay to meet De too!

De’s warmth and humor are greatly missed.  A lot of people claim that De had ‘lost his movie star looks’ by the time he got into TV, but that’s just wrong.  Sure, he wasn’t’ a Bill or a Leonard in magnetism, but he had a subtle romantic air that anyone could see if they just took the time to look! ( Oh, those baby blue eyes!) And the fact that he stayed  married to his beloved Carolyn for over  40+ years is the most romantic thing of all!    De, we’ll never forget you!

Next Time: De as the iconic Dr. McCoy
