My Weekly Spock: Rare Head Shot Restored

This week I’m featuring a rare head shot of Leonard that I bought from Historic Images.  I’ve seen a similar version from this session where he has a full smile, but in this one the smile is a little less broad.  These head shots were often used for reference in AP articles.  Historic Images also send a newspaper clipping of this practice in action; in this case, a  celebrity horoscope from 1972.  ( btw, the image of Nimoy was taken in 1969!)

I show first the original, which was quite grubby as it was probably stored in the bottom of a filing case for reference.  It had a lot of yellowing and a bit filmy. (looks like someone scratched his name into the film!)  I’m including both here so you can see the restoration I applied.  Enjoy!

Here’s the little clipping attached to the back of the glossy; if features a celebrity horoscope suggesting that Aries Leonard will become enamored of physic phenomena this week! (hmm.. precursor to “In Search Of?”)

My Weekly Spock: Come Fly With Me!

Many of you probably know that Leonard was a licensed pilot and owned a Piper for short trips — Let’s fly away!

My Weekly Spock – A Hug for the World

Just came across wonderful picture this recently -Leonard with open arms, ready to hug!  Who wants to jump in?hug to us alljpg

My Weekly Spock: Leonard Nimoy on the Carol Burnett Show in 1970.

Hi Everybody!   For Christmas last month,  I was delighted to receive the DVD set of The Carol Burnett Show, The Lost Episodes.  I was excited to know I’d be seeing the episodes from 1967-72 that never made it to syndication!  I was especially hoping to see the skit that went along with this famous still from Episode 12, Dec 4,1967 of Carol looking shocked as Leonard Nimoy (as Mr. Spock) appears in ‘Mrs. Invisible Man5oibo1.jpg.397c9a30c48867fae58c83484e55c8ab

Turns out, although the DVD set has many episodes, it is not a compilation of the 1st 5 seasons.  Instead are episodes hand-picked by Carol, packaged by TimeLife.com and issued piecemeal.   I only received the first 6- disc collection, and this episode alas, was not there. (Nor is it within the second ‘lost episode’ set).

However, there is a silver lining in this set! Leonard Nimoy does appear!  On the final disc, (Episode 316 from January 19, 1970) Nimoy appears as Paris from Mission: Impossible with Peter Graves, Greg Morris, and Peter Lupus in a surprise appearance at the end of a satirical Mission: Impossible skit!  I’ve included screencaps here for your viewing pleasure!  Carol gushes about M:I and gives a kiss to Peter Graves, and Leonard plants a sweet kiss on Carol too as he is clearly delighted to be there!  They all crack up as guest star Flip Wilson (as Geraldine Jones), cozies up to Greg Morris! Nimoy would later appear on Flip Wilson’s variety show.

Here’s hoping Carol will release the Spock episode too (but not holding my breath for it!)

My Weekly Spock: Love Comes in All Colors

In 1970, the National Urban Coalition created a public service message and a print ad with the words “Love Comes In All Colors”.   Leonard Nimoy participated in both of these messages, and if you look closely at the video, you can see him in  among the many celebrities and the cast of Hair singing Let the Sun Shine In (at :29 and at :36) He’s wearing a light plaid jacket and light green turtleneck.

In the early 70’s in a time of war, many truly believed we could change the world with love.  It’s an enduring message that is more profound now than ever. As we say farewell to 2015 and to Leonard Nimoy, I only wish that the spirit of love and brotherhood will still endure in our frenzied and terribly divisive culture.Wishing you love and peace in the new year.

My Weekly Spock-Behind the Scenes

It’s always fun to find promo and behind the scenes pics from TOS!  I’d love to have been a fly on the wall for some of these!  If you come across any, feel free to send them to me here at trekkerscrapbook@gmail.comtumblr_nxybynZMVU1qz5q5oo1_1280

My Weekly Spock: You Don’t Say! (or Ho, Ho, Ho??)

tumblr_nfijoyeYoY1r9wx7so1_500Leonard made a Christmas appearance on the game show You Don’t Say! in 1967 with host Tom Kennedy and June Lockhart (Lost in Space) He even wore a Santa hat, and June can’t stop playing with his pom-pom!  Oh how I envy the little girl on his lap!    I hope someday a video of this turns up!

My Weekly Spock: Romance Requited? The First Officer, the Nurse, and the Lost Scene.

When I started really watching Trek as a young teen,  I was enamored of the possible romance between Nurse Chapel and Mr. Spock.  I felt sympathy for her unrequited love for the tall cool Vulcan, and wondered if she’d ever melt his heart.

The original series only hinted at anything more between Spock and Chapel than mutual respect. Chapel was given her puppy-love moments in The Naked Time and Amok Time, but by the time she finally got an (albeit forced)  lip-lock with Spock, the original series was doomed to cancellation.   Sometimes I wonder if the series had continued if anything more would have become of Chapel’s infatuation, or even if she would have been given more than just the job of Enterprise Mom.

A recent discovery revealed a lot more insight within the  Spock/Chapel consciousness-sharing in Return to Tomorrow.  The scene was cut for length, and maybe just as well because what starts as a sweet sentimental moment ends as a somewhat stereotypical 60’s view of a woman’s mindset.  Here’s the scene: (found at Star Trek:The New Voyages)

CHRISTINE:  It was beautiful. (to Spock) I felt the same when I shared my consciousness with you.
Spock reacts; McCoy turns toward him:
McCOY:  That sounds almost immoral, Mister Spock.
SPOCK: I assure you, it was a most distressing experience. (to McCoy) Doctor, you could not believe the torrents of emotion I encountered…the… jungle of illogic…(Spock almost shudders) It was like being in the mind of an alien.
CHRISTINE:  (smiles)  Why, thank you, Mister Spock.
SPOCK: (puzzled) I don’t understand. Thank me?
KIRK: You just paid her a high compliment, Spock.
McCOY: Yes, you do turn a nice phrase
now and then, Spock. (to Christine) Thank the stars women are that different from us.
ANNE: (to Christine) Come along, fellow alien. If
he doesn’t understand, I doubt if we could explain.
SCENE 119 ANOTHER ANGLE
Kirk moving to his command chair. Spock is still standing there puzzled.
SPOCK: Captain… I really don’t understand.
KIRK: Sargon did, Spock. ‘Together… forever’. I hope some day with someone you’ll be able to
know what that means.
SPOCK:(considers it) Sargon was enormously advanced, Captain. I will consider this. Spock moves off to his station. Kirk and McCoy exchange looks; then Kirk turns toward the helm.
KIRK: Take us out of orbit, Mister Sulu.
SULU: Leaving orbit, Captain.
As they look up toward the Main Viewing Screen:
CUT TO:
SCENE 120 – INSERT MAIN VIEWING SCREEN
Leaving the planet, heading into star-studded space.
FADE OUT.
THE END

I think I’m happy with the way it was edited; her smile infers that her mind connection with Spock was quite a ride!  But then again, it’s nice to see Kirk wish Spock well with his future and Ann and Christine summing up Spock’s reaction to the meld.

I’ve heard that Roddenberry wanted Spock to end up with Chapel, but it was never to be in any current incarnation.  I’m sure there’s fan fiction about it, but my imagination is enough for now.  We heard about Spock’s wedding in an episode of The Next Generation; Picard says he attended but we don’t know the identity of the bride.   Maybe I’ll write a tale someday!

My Weekly Spock: “Introducing Mr. Spock” (Trek Premiere in Australia -1970)

Here’s a great tidbit:  A brief article in The Australian Women’s Weekly from August of 1970 — Star Trek begins global syndication and a star is born!  The writer was impressed with Mr. Spock most!

The small print reads:

“STAR-TREK”

The National Nine Network’s new science-fiction series takes viewers into deep space.

“Star Trek” tells the story of the starcruiser Enterprise and her crew.  Cruising in deep space, they monitor life in outer space, enforce space laws.  It is an incredible ship and an incredible crew.  My favorite is Science Officer Mr. Spock, right, (Leonard Nimoy).  Mr. Spock is a new breed, half earthman, half planet man — one parent from earth one from the planet Vulcan.  Note his pointed ears — NAN MUSGROVE

Introducing MR. SPOCK

  • “Star Trek may be seen in Sydney on TC429 Thursdays, 8:30 p.m. in other capital cities later.

(Lower caption)   ENTERPRISE chief officers with two ‘other ranks’. My Weekly Spock – Nimoy on 87th Precinct: The Very Hard Sell

Here’s some great production pics of Leonard with actress Charlene Whitman  as guests on the series 87th Precinct.   He played a mysterious murderer/con artist Barrow and she was his conflicted girlfriend, Stella,  in the episode The Very Hard Sell.  (1961)  He’s both a jerk and a charmer here.  Note: Nimoy doesn’t appear until @ 2/3rds into the episode, but he’s worth every minute.

The star of the show was none other than Robert Lansing as Detective Steve Carella, who would later play Gary Seven in Assignment: Earth.  Does the detective get his man?  You can see all of The Very Hard Sell  here.
