My Weekly Spock: 7/22/13 Smilin’ Sixties Nimoy!

I would have called this week’s column “Smilin’ Sixties Spock” for the alliteration, but he’s just himself here. (Hard not to smile when he had a steady job for the first time in his career!) Keep Smiling! And as Nimoy said
“Get Involved!”

My Weekly Spock: Gimme a Head with Hair…

Mr. Nimoy sure has certainly been blessed with excellent follicles all his life– (Is that the sound of Shatner envy?  ;-)) Who could forget the Spock’s silky black hair or Paris’ luscious waves? Here’s some of Mr. Nimoy’s greatest hair hits:

My Weekly Spock: 7/8/13 — Trek Photocall from 2009 by Gallo

I came across these splendid pictures from photographer Armando Gallo on Fanpop, and they’re so well taken you can almost hear the conversation during the shoot!  This was a Star Trek photocall from 2009 (hence the crew-cut).   I love how Gallo’s photos totally capture Nimoy’s engaging personality, and I’m sure Mr. Nimoy was pleased with them.  Enjoy, and I congratulate Mr. Gallo on these delightfully animated photos!

My Weekly Spock 6/10/13 –Spock Therapy

Hi Kids.  I’m back.  I think I need some Spock-Therapy…

It's been a hard week

It’s been a hard week

Sometimes I'm just so sad.

Sometimes I’m just so sad.

Sometimes I want to scream

Sometimes I want to scream

Other times I'm just so mad

Other times I’m just so mad

Sometimes it feels like a nightmare

Sometimes it feels like a nightmare

I'll miss my Mom so much

I’ll miss my Mom so much

So thankful for my family and friends

So thankful for my family and friends

But if I concentrate

But if I concentrate

And breathe...

And breathe…

and pray with meditation

and pray with meditation

And keep her in my heart

And keep her in my heart

Slowly I'll make it through, and in time...

Slowly I’ll make it through, and in time…

The sun will shine again.

Seriously what are they doing with those stage lights?

The basic stage direction for most of these shots was “Just stand dramatically and stare…” I wonder what was going through their heads while posing, and if they ever cracked up while trying to appear so serious!

My Weekly Spock 5/13/13 – Spock:The Next Generation

(Sorry I’m a little late today, I have a mild stomach bug 😦  )

Since the new movie debuts this week here in America (some of you have been lucky to see it already!) it’s a good time to catch up with our two favorite Spocks; Nimoy and Quinto.  I gotta say, when I saw  J.J. Abrams reboot of  Star Trek in 2009, it reminded me what I loved about the series; Not just Nimoy and Shatner, but The Characters.   Abrams couldn’t have picked a better Spock.  Quinto truly makes Spock  a simmering volcano (or should that be Vulcano?) as he gives his an edge (and the the anger) that we knew were under the surface of Spock.  His acid “Live Long and Prosper!” to the Vulcan higher-ups was basically a calculated ‘up yours’ disguised as a friendly greeting. But Quinto gives Spock a beautiful vulnerability too, as seen after the loss of his mother Amanda, and his tenderness to Uhura. (which I loved, btw) Here are some N/Q moments, because Spock is a character too good for just one generation. spockNimoyVSspockQuinto

My Weekly Spock 4/29/13 — More Bizarre Leaf Trading Cards

As I pointed out the other week, the first Star Trek bubble gum cards were produced by the Leaf company in 1967 — and they were a pretty bizarre collection.  Loaded with rehearsal outtake photos with odd titles and truly false plot summaries, the Leaf cards obviously didn’t take Trek too seriously. Spock becomes everything from a senator to a teeny-bopper!  Here’s some more Crazy–enjoy!

My Weekly Spock 4/22/13 Classic Head Shots

Here’s this week’s Spock fix:  From 1966, here are some iconic head shots of Nimoy as Spock that were taken for TV Guide- The king of cool strikes again.

My Weekly Spock 4/15/13 – 1967 Leaf Trading Cards, Part I – Sloppy Spock Shirts

We all know that Jim Kirk ripped his shirt a zillion times over  three seasons of Star Trek, but Spock was usually neat and refined–until now.  These three trading cards are from 1967, from the Leaf company reveal Spock in a most un-regal, sloppy way, his collar torn open in all three. 🙂  The Star Trek Leaf cards were originally printed in 1967 and reprinted in 1981, so if anyone tries to sell you a set, be sure you check the copy write on it (the newer ones are clearly labeled with 1981) The Leaf cards start out with many standard descriptions of the scenes on the front.    Obviously many of these stills were taken during rehearsals on the Trek set, many  making for the strangest captions and descriptions you’d ever find related the original series, (I’ll showcase some of the really bizarre ones next week).  But for now, these rare shots reveal the secret of the original Trek uniforms;  many of them opened at the neck and off the shoulder seam, and I’m guessing it was a relief to open the tight necks during rehearsals, as Nimoy apparently often did.  All this time I just thought they were pull-overs. Now if only Spock was allowed as many ripped shirt scenes as Kirk! ST-Leaf1967-11A021 leaf card collision courseST-Leaf1967-12A023
