Farewell Professor! Russell Johnson dies at 89.

ssrussell3

Actor Russel Johnson in his most famous role: Professor Roy Hinkley on Gilligan’s Island.

Another familiar face from my childhood passed away today — actor Russell Johnson, best known as “The Professor” on Gilligan’s Island passed away today at the age of 89.

We watched “Gilligan” all the time when I was growing up, and yeah it was pretty silly, but often it had some sly underlying humor.  I always had a little crush on The Professor too;(so handsome!) Russell was a peach and I wanted him and Ginger to run off together.   My favorite scenes on the show were whenever  dream sequences were played out, taking the castaways out of their island dilemma.(He’s so funny as the old man here)

Here he discusses Gilligan:

But Russell Johnson did more than Gilligan; in the 50’s he co-starred in the classic sci-fi film, This Island Earth, and  was a wonderful character actor who guest starred on many TV shows throughout his career, as well as Marshall Gib Scott on the western Black Saddle.  He was always friendly and grateful for his fans, and never forgot them. He was also a loving family man and AIDS activist. He will be missed. 😦

Chemical Spill in West Virginia

Hey All,

My good friend Liz lives in Charleston, West Virginia where a chemical spill has forced 300,000 residents to stop using tap water for any use other than flushing and fire fighting.  Liz is coping, but my heart goes out to her, her family and everyone affected. The National Guard is distributing water, and Liz had some on hand and is collecting rainwater, but the air smells like licorice and God knows how this may affect residents when this crisis is cleared up.

Do any of my Scrappers here live in or near Charleston? Let me know. (You’ve welcome to vent here). Unfortunately, the chemical plant is just upriver from a water intake facility, so the water system has been heavily infiltrated.  This was a gross mismanagement of common sense in planning and execution. Prayers to all of them.

Leonard Nimoy Should Sue the National Examiner

I hate tabloids.

Every week as I check out my groceries,  among the TV Guides and Oprah magazines, a new batch of glossy, gossip rags blare at me from the checkout counter. I don’t give them much notice, and the ones I do notice are pretty laughable.   They range in sensationalism from bad to worse but the worst of these is likey The National Examiner, which is probably the most outrageous.  The covers of this particular tab specializes in paparazzi shots that capture celebrities at their worst.  This week’s caught my eye not for who’s got cellulite or the latest scandal, but for the latest in their most morbid, and what appears to be continuing series:  “SAD LAST  DAYS!”  They trot these out every few weeks or so, guess who was on the cover of this weeks?

examinerYup.

Now, I didn’t bother to read the actual article, and I wouldn’t spend a penny on them*, but what bothers me most is  that whenever a celebrity’s mortality is truly or falsely at stake, this particular tab insists that their “last days” are always ‘Sad’ ones. Because of course, ALL celebrities cannot come to a good end. They must suffer horribly because they are rich and famous.

I got news for the National Examiner.  Everyone ages. Everyone dies. And not every celebrity can look 100% perfect at every outing. And no matter HOW they look, you can’t  condemn them to death just because they’re having a bad hair day or more wrinkles than they used to.  Yes, of course many beloved celebrities are not as young as they used to be, but you know what?  They’ve worked hard for their success, they’ve made millions of people happy, and above all, they’re happy with themselves! (Even if some of them are sick!**)  So lay off this crap! Or if you must peddle it, go digital and save a million trees!

Mr. Nimoy, Sir,  I presume from your recent tweets that you’re fine.  But I think you, Ed, Michael, Marjorie, Mary, Suzanne, and Dolly should sue these fools. You don’t deserve this.

*the above is a picture I found online.                                                                                  **with love to Mary Tyler Moore

Happy Elvis’ Birthday!

Colbert Report – Two Bad Inventions! Baby I-Pads and Potty Chairs

Had to share this —Probably the two WORST baby inventions EVER. Baby seats and potty chairs that incorporate I-Pads! At this rate, the next generation will all turn into the obese layabout cruise ship inhabitants in WALL-e! This is so wrong (Colbert makes it funny in it’s inanity). If future generations only look at I-Pads and spout corporate logos, we’re in trouble. I really hope these don’t catch on.

(For those of you unfamiliar , Stephen Colbert is a very funny American comedian who portrays a conservative news reporter on his fake news show “The Colbert Report”. His ‘Tip of the Hat, Wag of the Finger’ segments hilariously skewer American lifestyles).

Hi Everybody.

Hey Kids,

Sorry I haven’t posted in a while.  I’ve been a bit off, and dealing with some sickness. (anxiety, etc).  I’m getting used to my new course of medicine and I almost feel back to normal at this point.  At times I think the side effects  were worse than the actual illness, but it is all for the good.  I think I just need a little more of a break to settle my brain and relieve my stress.  I am slowly getting better but appreciate your patience. Hope you’re all cozy and warm, especially in the Eastern U.S.  (Our schools are closed here for frigid temperatures).   I hope to be back to regular posting soon, we’ll see. Thanks and bless you all, hugs, Therese
