I wasn’t going to post anything new until Monday, but just came across this!!! Squeee! Here’s the Japanese version of the preview for the new movie Star Trek Into Darkness coming in May! I ‘m posting the Japanese version because it has a touch more footage, most notably it appears Spock’s hand giving the Vulcan salute through glass to… someone ( reference to “The Wrath of Khan?”)
The plot of this one seems to be someone evil planning vengeance against Kirk and crew, just a matter of speculating who this bad guy is. A lot have suggested that it’s Khan, but after closer examination, I think it’s Gary Mitchell from Where No Man Has Gone Before, which is an exciting prospect to me because I always felt bad that Mitchell had to die in the original. Another hint? The pretty blond crew-member looks like Dr. Elizabeth Dehner from that original pilot. ( I thought it might have been Yeoman Rand at first, but she’s wearing science blue!)
Oh man, I can’t wait! Questions? Comments? Let us speculate!
The general consensus is that it’s Gary Mitchell, not something I’d have spotted by looking at the trailer. Agreed, the lady looks like Elizabeth Dehner, so we’re all probably right. My heart sinks like a large stone at this trailer, as action movies and disaster movies are not films I would ever go and see, and I’m just hoping that there’s more to this than this trailer indicates. My hope comes from the fact that the first one was trailed with nothing more than people and ships exploding and that turned out to be Trek that we all recognise and love, so here’s hoping there’s more to the 2nd reboot than is suggested here!

Hi Winston, I wouldn’t be too concerned about all the ‘action’, as most trailers push the envelope of blasting to attract the 14-35 demographic they seek. I’m sure there will be plenty of action, but this looks promising on the psychological front too. Also, this is only the first ‘teaser’ trailer, geared to suck in fanboys with the action.
I admit, I do not love action movies (The exceptions being The Fifth Element, James Bond, and Indiana Jones) for a lot of them look alike after a while, and too much blasting gets really boring when it’s 90% of a movie. But I have high hopes for this one, just hope we’ll get more Spock,McCoy, Uhura, and more human interest as was seen in the first (which I LOVED!). There appears to be some real drama here (the hand shot, Scotty comforting Uhura) and possible romance (Kirk seems to be mooning over the blond (I’ll say it’s Dehner) And Gary Mitchell is a character that I always wanted to know more. So don’t panic, I think it’ll be great!
