FArF: Trek Art by Gray Morrow

Gray Morrow (1934-2001)was a comic book and paperback cover artist known for Man Thing and El Diablo, but he also occasionally dabbled in Star Trek.  Here’s his works from the early 70’s, including a colorized version for Monster Times (remember that?) Not sure what the obelisk represents in the second image, but these are delightfully dramatic.

FArFri: Trek Like an Egyptian…Pop Culture Hieroglyphic by Josh Lane

Just came across a bunch of these pieces featuring pop culture characters as Egyptian hieroglyphics!  Kirk is naturally the pharaoh and Spock is can truly walk like an Egyptian!  This is clever in so many ways; I especially love the Gorn in the corner!   You can see more of these wonders here.

FArFri: Adopt a Tribble!

Found this on Tumblr — So cute.  Things go better with tribbles — even Spock is happy!   The cartoon styling remind me of the kinds of characters you’d see in a mid century UPA cartoon!   The cartoon is credited to annamariajung.com, but I did not see anything like it there.

No Dance Tonight — Bruce Hyde 1941-2015

So sad to report that another Star Trek original has passed.  The wonderful Bruce Hyde, who will forever be the excitable Lt. Kevin Thomas Riley to Trek fans, passed away from throat cancer on October 13th.  He was 74.   😦

The character of Riley was featured in two of the the best original series episodes:  The Naked Time and The Conscience of the King.  Although he took a dramatic turn as the would-be assassin of the evil Kodos in  Conscience… Hyde brought the character a likability beyond adorable.  His navigator might have been bored in engineering, but no doubt was loyal and a favorite among the crew.  One would love to be pals with the proud Irishman– especially if he could swing you some ice cream in a bowling alley!      😉   The little touches Hyde added to the drunken Riley  — posing like a cowboy in the elevator, silently commanding a door to open as he left sickbay– were brilliant. I wish Riley could have been featured in more episodes, but two was probably enough for Hyde, who was surprised and delighted that his fame in this little role was still recognized nearly 50 years later.thenakedtimehd0495

I remember seeing Hyde at the BiCentennial-10 Star Trek Convention in NYC in 1976 — I was late to his appearance and just got there in time to see him sing Riley’s drunken ode I’ll take you home again, Kathleen to the crowd –they ate it up!thenakedtimehd0801

Bruce Wily Loman 2006

Bruce as Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman on Broadway in 2006.

But I hope Trek fans will also recall that Hyde was more than an actor, but also an author and  beloved professor emeritus of communication studies at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, as well as an acting coach.   He also appeared  on Dr. Kildare and That Girl, as well as in Death of a Salesman on Broadway.  You can read more about brilliant Bruce here.

Another wonderful Trek soul is beamed up, he’ll be missed but never forgotten.  Thanks for the laughs Mr. Riley, there will be a dance for you tonight in the bowling alley of heaven!  And as for Kathleen? I have to say “One…More…TIME!”

“No dance tonight!” I’d dance with you, Riley. ❤

FArFri: Some Silliness by artist simengt

Recently I’ve come across these silly and often bizarre but very funny Trek toons by South Korean artist simengt.  Sometimes the comics are based on actual episodes:

st___amok_time___jim_by_simengt-d3fwv2ost__all_our_yesterdays_by_simengt-d47kz6s

Sometimes she makes up situations:

And quite often, characters change gender:

Her style is somewhere between Chibi and Ren and Stimpy, (especially in the distorted histrionics)  but it’s all fun! Keep up the good work!

Back from a Busy Summer! Museum Trek at the Museum of the Moving Image

Hey Everyone!  How you all doing? Did you have a nice summer? Did you get outside?  Did you see the Super Blood moon on Sunday night? Any adventures? Romances? New recipes?

The bulk of my summer was spent on two main things; getting myself into better shape and helping our son get his driver’s license.  Happy to report we succeeded on both accounts; my son got his license and I’m feeling great!

I had a few adventures — I had gone to the Museum of The Moving Image in NYC to see the Mad Men exhibit (now closed)  What a joy to see many of the iconic costumes and recreations of the sets in person!  But to my delight,     there was also an exhibit of classic TV and Movie memorabilia, and what should I see there but some awfully familiar Star Trek stuff from my youth!

One big surprise was seeing the red spaceman costume Robin Williams wore as Mork in Mork and Mindy, not just because it was worn by the wonderful Williams, but also because of its relation to Star Trek!  Did you know that Mork’s red uniform was originally worn by Colonel Green in the Trek episode The Savage Curtain?  (But to be fair, I’d take Mork over Green anyday!)  Hmm, better add this costume recycle to that article I wrote a while back…)

GreenMork

Col. Green in his original red uniform in “The Savage Curtain” and Mork in his modified version of the same costume in Mork and Mindy. Mork’s costume removed the small accouterments from the shoulders and added the silver triangle, but kept the collar and cuff detail’ later adding the black epaulets.

The Mork/Green Costume as is appears today at the MOTMI

And as if seeing an actual Trek costume wasn’t enough, I found a whole mess of Trek stuff in the section “Behind the Screen” which featured lots of Trek and other baby boomer series merchandising (Jetsons, Man from UNCLE, you name it!)   There were also many dolls from Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and even several fanzines, as well as models, puzzles and toys. I admit, seeing some of the Trek items there from the 1970’s, including a mug and a Mego Spock doll that I still actually have at home made me feel a little old!   But nice to know that some of my old stuff is considered museum worthy!

I gotta tell you, merchandising for Star Trek went crazy in the 1970s — and not all of it great quality — so often the uniform colors were wrong (Spock as a redshirt!) or promo photos were printed backward.  But as long as it had those Trek characters on it (especially Mr. Spock) it was a slam dunk for merchandising!  The only thing I didn’t see were Star Trek Colorforms (Remember Colorforms?)    Enjoy the pics!

So did you have a good summer too?  Miss me?  😉   Next time- Seeing the Space Shuttle Enterprise!

My Weekly Spock: Leonard, Bill, and Harlan

Here’s a wonderful photo of  Leonard and Bill with writer Harlan Ellison (The City on the Edge 0f Forever).  From the set design,  I’m guessing it was taken during the filming of  Mudd’s Women

Nimoy and Shatner’s autographs are so very typical of their personalities!

Nimoy: Harlan, Love you and your great credits” –  Shatner: “Who the kid in the middle?”Harlan Ellison

lol.   I bet they had a great time!

I’ve also see a version of this photo edited to appeal to all the ‘slash’ fans out there-with Harlan missing and L & N side hugging!  Can’t find a link but you get it.
