The Daily Scrapbook 2/5/13 — March 29, 1978 ‘Starship on a Silver Screen’

Hi Kids, here’s today’s flashback:  From March 29, 1978, the news all Trekkies longed to hear: Star Trek was finally coming back, and now as a movie! Now in my lifetime, there had been many movies turned into TV series, but never vice-versa.   The first Trek movie was a pioneer in this aspect.   I was so happy that Nimoy was back as Spock, and recall being cautiously optimistic about the movie, which turned out to be with good reason.  Despite all the bells and whistles, the first movie to me just wasn’t Star Trek; the uniforms were ugly dull polyester onesies, the Klingons were bumpy,  Shatner’s toupee was all wrong! A tally of offenses abounded in first movie.   There were intensely loving but terribly long and  slo-o-o-o-ow close-ups of the Enterprise.  The splendid music and special effects were loud, but the dialogue was annoyingly whispered.  The plot meant well, but it was executed all wrong! But the worst offense was  that there was hardly any humor in it, (save for McCoy) with the characters so sombre I wondered if Nimoy’s character from Invasion of the Body Snatchers had turned the whole Enterprise crew into pod people!  I was so disappointed with it that I was ready to give up on my beloved series.  Was there anything I liked about the first movie?  Yes. Jerry Goldsmith’s  “Illia’s Theme” was dreamily beautiful, and still gives me chills. Alas, even the love story between she and Decker wasn’t utilized as well as it could have been.  I give Roddenberry and crew points for trying,  but unfortunately, it would be  three years until the second movie‘s glory made up for the first ones dearth of spirit (in spades!)                By the way — this was the final article posted in my original scrapbook– a fitting end to five years of clippings up to this point. Volume II will start tomorrow (there are four volumes in all).  Thanks for coming along for the ride so far! V1-pg 71 copy

Toon Tuesday 1/22/13 ‘Magic Fingers’

Hey kids, sorry I haven’t posted much lately, but I am working new scrapbook posts, including the one where  I met Leonard Nimoy in 1978, and ‘toon design posts.   Currently I’m working on a key to the poster I presented last week “Lets Hear It for the 430!” and that’s taking a bit longer than I thought! Hope to have it up before the week is through. Busy in my real life too, with family and  my home business.    Thanks for your patience.  In the meantime, here’s this week’s Toon! (I think we could all use a good neck rub!) Enjoy! Therese

FArFri — 12/28/12 ‘Sponge Trek’

Thought I’d end FArFri 2012 with a laugh! Here’s three drawings from a series I’m creating — Sponge Trek!   (Sponge Bob characters in Star Trek gear!)   I’m especially proud of ‘Spockward’; it’s amazing how Squidward fits so well into the Spock persona! More to come soon, enjoy, and Happy New Year! -Therese

FArFri — Just for you, a Box O’Spocks!

Hello everyone!  A special FArFri for you today! Wishing you all a beautiful and safe Holiday Season and a very Happy New Year!  Thanks for all your support!  As a little present , I offer you — a Box O’ Spocks!

For  a guy who is supposedly emotionless. Spock sure  SMILES a lot, especially in Season 1.  Although most of these smiles were generated through an alien force, like Henoch or Kollos, it’s  all the better for us!  To me, whenever Spock smiles, it was less Spock and pure  Nimoy.  May you find your holidays as pleasant! love, Therese 🙂

Bonus Friday Post — Trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness

I wasn’t going to post anything new until Monday, but just came across this!!!  Squeee!  Here’s the Japanese version of the preview for the new movie  Star Trek Into Darkness coming in May!   I ‘m posting the Japanese version because it has a touch more footage, most notably it appears Spock’s hand giving the Vulcan salute through glass to… someone ( reference to “The Wrath of Khan?”)

The plot of this one seems to be someone evil planning vengeance against Kirk and crew, just a matter of speculating who this bad guy is.   A lot have suggested that it’s Khan, but after closer examination, I think it’s Gary Mitchell from Where No Man Has Gone Before, which is an exciting prospect to me because I always felt bad that Mitchell had to die in the original.   Another hint?  The pretty blond crew-member looks like Dr. Elizabeth Dehner from that original pilot.  ( I thought it might have been Yeoman Rand at first, but she’s wearing science blue!)

FArFri – 12/7/12 The Dream Fulfilled by Porcelain Requiem

Friday already?  Time for some art to ease you into your weekend.  the_dream_fulfilled____by_porcelain_requiem-d36ll4kSince Nurse Chapel was heartbroken in my StarTreKomic this week, it seemed only fair to give her a happy ending today!  Hence Spock and Chapel marry in “The Dream Fulfilled” by artist porcelain requiem.   I love the animated quality of this! Did you know that Gene Roddenberry wanted Nurse Chapel to end up with Spock?  I always hoped she would!

Wideo Wednesday 11/28/12 Animaniacs Parody “Star Truck”

I used to watch Animaniacs all the time, but amazingly, I must have missed this one.  (I do remember another episode that totally lambasted Shatner!)

I always appreciated how costume designer William Ware Theiss kept to his budget, even if it involved shower curtains!
