Hey Kids,
Today is a special anniversary! It was 50 years ago today, November 17, 1966, that Star Trek aired the first part of it’s only 2-part episode, The Menagerie, on NBC.
The episode conveniently helped keep production costs down by recycling Star Trek’s original pilot The Cage into a new story about Spock’s loyalty to his first captain, Christopher Pike. Pretty clever, actually, and aren’t we grateful for it! Gene didn’t want the pilot to be forgotten, and by making it the center of a new episode, it built up the canon of the original series.
But even more importantly, it offered first insights into Mr. Spock’s past, and revealed his devotion to his first captain, now seriously paralyzed, and willingness to risk court martial and even death to give his captain a better life. It also gave us our first inklings into just how human this logical, stoic Vulcan could be. I’ll discuss more about it in a future post. But for now, I really loved this episode. A shame there were not more two-parters made.

This is all kinds of wonderful. Just a few days ago at the the Destination: Star Trek Convention in Birmingham, England, the stars the many Trek incarnations as well as special guests posed on a lovely recreation of the Enterprise bridge! But most importantly, Captain Kirk, Mr. Chekov and Mr. Sulu were back at their stations!
This picture got me a little emotional! Seeing William Shatner, Walter Koenig and George Takei sitting so fine just made my heart swell (and break just a little)! Unfortunately, Nichelle Nichols couldn’t make it, but I’m sure she was there in spirit. And as beautiful as this is, it made me miss the crew now watching from above: Leonard Nimoy, Deforest Kelley, James Doohan, Majel Barrett, and Grace Lee Whitney ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤
Fortunately, the legendary three here had plenty of support in their Trek family. Most notable is Leonard’s son, Adam Nimoy, standing in for his beloved father. As much as I wish that Leonard was still here, I’m so thankful that Adam was there for him.
I also LOVE that George Takei wore a black shirt with a bright yellow sweater, mimicking his original uniform, and look how proudly his sits back at his helm! Steady as she goes!

Lately I’ve been reacquainting myself with the animated Star Trek series (TAS -1973-4). I remember being a 12-year old and excited that my favorite show was being brought back (at least in animation) and that maybe the Enterprise could finally finish its five year mission! For the most part, it was pretty good, I only wished I had a color TV to watch it on! Anyway, recently I’ve seen a few episodes on Netflix and it really seemed all new to me again, as I hadn’t since the early 70’s. I was taken by the lovely backgrounds and the simple, but accurate way the animation captured the faces and subtle nuances of the original actors. (Can a cartoon male be handsome? You bet!). But something that also stood out for me was how the series often mimicked the original (TOS) in angles and style; the creators at Filmation clearly did their homework as you’ll see in these examples. Lets’ start with some opening Enterprise shots. The makers of the series did a beautiful job recreating the ship. There’s much more detail in the orbital images than the character scenes, but it’s lovely. Rotoscoping anyone?

But wait, there’s more. There were several detail and character scenes that were clearly influenced by the original (if sometimes with subtlety):
Scotty in a shaft in “Once Upon a Planet” and in the Jeffries Tube in “The Naked Time”.

Eyebrow City – Lara from ‘The Jihad’ and Zora from “The Savage Curtain”
Ready for my super close-up: Magna in ‘The Time Trap’ and Sirah in “The Omega Glory”
They HAD to do this one! Kirk’s booted feet with tribbles in “More Tribbles, More Troubles”, and in “The Trouble with Tribbles”
In Once Upon a Planet, the Enterprise crew visits the amusement park planet again as they did in Shore Leave – so of course Alice and the White Rabbit are there, but then there’s a clear reference to Catspaw, when a giant cat menaces the crew from a doorway:
Another revisited character was Harry Mudd – this time in Mudd’s Passion, peddling love potion to Nurse Chapel in her eternal quest for Spock’s affections. Here, he offers her pills, just as he did to his ‘cargo’ in Mudd’s Women: 
Finally, this one surprised me the most: In Albatross, Nurse Chapel checks on sleeping patient Kol-Tai in practically the same angle she checks in on a sleeping Spock in Amok Time! 
Well, this was a fun visit to the Saturday morning cartoons of my youth (modern kids don’t know what they were missing!) If anyone here knows of any more similarities between TAS and TOS, let me know! I’ll post them!

I’ve been to a few conventions in my time, but I realize the last time I was in at a major convention in NYC was 40 years ago this month! It was Star Trek Bi-Centennial-10 in 1976, a when I was 15! So much has changed in that time. With the advent of Comic-Cons and such, there is more emphasis on all different types of fantasy and sci-fi creations (and that is great), but it’ll be really fun to be among mostly Trekkies here 🙂 I admit, when I’ve gone to our local ‘RoberCon’ in the past few years, it’s a tad frustrating (or at least a reminder that I’m getting old!) that the younger kids have no idea who I’m dressing up as. Kids thought I was an elf from Lord of the Rings when I dressed up as T’Pau the other year, and you’d be amazed how many people thought I was Nurse Chapel when I dressed up as Yeoman Rand last year!
But at Star Trek Mission New York, I’m sure that true Trekkers will know that I’m Dr. Miranda Jones from “Is There in Truth No Beauty?” (Assuming I finish my costume on time!!)

Browsing the net yesterday and came across this fantastic auction of Star Trek items! There are props, scripts and costumes from all the Trek series, but I’m focusing on TOS here 🙂
The Auction is being held by the site invaluble.com, and you can see the entire list of Trek items here. Note: This auction started yesterday (6/29) and ends tomorrow (7/1) — the bidding is going on as I write this, (on unpublished photo negatives, scripts, etc>) and they’re saving the real iconic stuff for the last day! Costumes!!! (Spock’s Shirt! Carolyn Palamas’ pink toga!!!)
I’m amazed to see how so many of these survived 50+ years in remarkable shape! Of course, if I had money to burn, you know I’d bid heavily on the Spock Tunic! The story of the tunic is incredible — this original screen-worn tunic of Nimoy’s was won in a movie magazine contest in 1968, and the owner has kept it quietly in her dark closet all these years; preventing fading and damage (thank goodness there wasn’t a fire in all those years!) Seeing the condition of some of these gives an insight to how backstage work went; there’s an insignia missing 0n a couple, probably re-used) And the Klingon pants were see-through??? (worn with black pants underneath!) You gotta hand it to the auction company Profiles in History to find all the coolest stuff!
It’s a TOS fans dream! Get a load of these! (No drooling on your device!)
When I started really watching Trek as a young teen, I was enamored of the possible romance between Nurse Chapel and Mr. Spock. I felt sympathy for her unrequited love for the tall cool Vulcan, and wondered if she’d ever melt his heart.
The original series only hinted at anything more between Spock and Chapel than mutual respect. Chapel was given her puppy-love moments in The Naked Time and Amok Time, but by the time she finally got an (albeit forced) lip-lock with Spock, the original series was doomed to cancellation. Sometimes I wonder if the series had continued if anything more would have become of Chapel’s infatuation, or even if she would have been given more than just the job of Enterprise Mom.
A recent discovery revealed a lot more insight within the Spock/Chapel consciousness-sharing in Return to Tomorrow. The scene was cut for length, and maybe just as well because what starts as a sweet sentimental moment ends as a somewhat stereotypical 60’s view of a woman’s mindset. Here’s the scene: (found at Star Trek:The New Voyages)
CHRISTINE: It was beautiful. (to Spock) I felt the same when I shared my consciousness with you.
Spock reacts; McCoy turns toward him:
McCOY: That sounds almost immoral, Mister Spock.
SPOCK: I assure you, it was a most distressing experience. (to McCoy) Doctor, you could not believe the torrents of emotion I encountered…the… jungle of illogic…(Spock almost shudders) It was like being in the mind of an alien.
CHRISTINE: (smiles) Why, thank you, Mister Spock.
SPOCK: (puzzled) I don’t understand. Thank me?
KIRK: You just paid her a high compliment, Spock.
McCOY: Yes, you do turn a nice phrase
now and then, Spock. (to Christine) Thank the stars women are that different from us.
ANNE: (to Christine) Come along, fellow alien. If
he doesn’t understand, I doubt if we could explain.
SCENE 119 ANOTHER ANGLE
Kirk moving to his command chair. Spock is still standing there puzzled.
SPOCK: Captain… I really don’t understand.
KIRK: Sargon did, Spock. ‘Together… forever’. I hope some day with someone you’ll be able to
know what that means.
SPOCK:(considers it) Sargon was enormously advanced, Captain. I will consider this. Spock moves off to his station. Kirk and McCoy exchange looks; then Kirk turns toward the helm.
KIRK: Take us out of orbit, Mister Sulu.
SULU: Leaving orbit, Captain.
As they look up toward the Main Viewing Screen:

I think I’m happy with the way it was edited; her smile infers that her mind connection with Spock was quite a ride! But then again, it’s nice to see Kirk wish Spock well with his future and Ann and Christine summing up Spock’s reaction to the meld.
I’ve heard that Roddenberry wanted Spock to end up with Chapel, but it was never to be in any current incarnation. I’m sure there’s fan fiction about it, but my imagination is enough for now. We heard about Spock’s wedding in an episode of The Next Generation; Picard says he attended but we don’t know the identity of the bride. Maybe I’ll write a tale someday!

At Last!
One more time! The last time we see Spock and Chapel together in ‘Turnabout Intruder’

Hey Everyone! How you all doing? Did you have a nice summer? Did you get outside? Did you see the Super Blood moon on Sunday night? Any adventures? Romances? New recipes?
The bulk of my summer was spent on two main things; getting myself into better shape and helping our son get his driver’s license. Happy to report we succeeded on both accounts; my son got his license and I’m feeling great!
I had a few adventures — I had gone to the Museum of The Moving Image in NYC to see the Mad Men exhibit (now closed) What a joy to see many of the iconic costumes and recreations of the sets in person! But to my delight, there was also an exhibit of classic TV and Movie memorabilia, and what should I see there but some awfully familiar Star Trek stuff from my youth!
One big surprise was seeing the red spaceman costume Robin Williams wore as Mork in Mork and Mindy, not just because it was worn by the wonderful Williams, but also because of its relation to Star Trek! Did you know that Mork’s red uniform was originally worn by Colonel Green in the Trek episode The Savage Curtain? (But to be fair, I’d take Mork over Green anyday!) Hmm, better add this costume recycle to that article I wrote a while back…)
Col. Green in his original red uniform in “The Savage Curtain” and Mork in his modified version of the same costume in Mork and Mindy. Mork’s costume removed the small accouterments from the shoulders and added the silver triangle, but kept the collar and cuff detail’ later adding the black epaulets.

And as if seeing an actual Trek costume wasn’t enough, I found a whole mess of Trek stuff in the section “Behind the Screen” which featured lots of Trek and other baby boomer series merchandising (Jetsons, Man from UNCLE, you name it!) There were also many dolls from Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and even several fanzines, as well as models, puzzles and toys. I admit, seeing some of the Trek items there from the 1970’s, including a mug and a Mego Spock doll that I still actually have at home made me feel a little old! But nice to know that some of my old stuff is considered museum worthy!
I gotta tell you, merchandising for Star Trek went crazy in the 1970s — and not all of it great quality — so often the uniform colors were wrong (Spock as a redshirt!) or promo photos were printed backward. But as long as it had those Trek characters on it (especially Mr. Spock) it was a slam dunk for merchandising! The only thing I didn’t see were Star Trek Colorforms (Remember Colorforms?) Enjoy the pics!
