I’m always happy when a reader sends me their fan art, and this week I got a beauty from artist Silja Siirilä of Finland! Thanks so much Silja! This a gorgeous painting of Spock, and I hope we’ll be seeing more from you in the future! I bet Leonard would have loved this! I can’t imagine a better way to start the new year! Thanks so much for sharing and keep up the good work!
It’s the most Trek-iful time of the year! I looked up Trek and Christmas and came up with this:
First, these adorable Trek Christms Cards from nafftastic on Etsy. I love that Uhura is a singing angel, although I think Scotty should have the red Rudolph nose and Spock should definitely be an Elf!
Last week I shared some funny Trek/Simpsonshomages with you, today it’s the other great Groening creation, Futurama, which often featured inside Trek jokes and even occasional Trek stars (or at least their heads) as guests!
Futurama is the tale of Phillip J. Fry, a pizza delivery boy who falls into a cryogenic tube in 1999, only to wake up 300 years later, where he’ll still be a delivery boy for Planet Express. His co workers include Professor Hubert Farnsworth, one-eyed Leela, crustacean Dr. Zoidberg and Bender, the smart-ass robot. If you’ve never seen Futurama, you can catch it on Netlfix, it’s a treat!
In “Why Must I Be a Crustacean in Love?” you get Futurama’s take on Amok Time — note the ‘national anthem’ at 2:19! 😉
Perhaps one Trek-iest episodes ever was Where No Fan Has Gone Before, where original Trek cast members and the crew of Planet Express find themselves prisoners of Melvar, the ultimate Trekkie, who insists on having a permanent Star Trek Convention, with the original series stars.
Over the years, The Simpsons has occasionally referenced Trek TOS, and here’s a compilation of closing credits with Simpson Characters in full Trek drag! I’m pretty sure all of you know the references! I love Marge as Vina!
Most recently, an opening ‘couch gag’ featured Homer and the crew of the Enterprise (or should that be Donutprize?) fighting off the fierce couch –guess who won?
There were many other instances of Simpson/Trek crossovers and of course many references in Matt Goering’s brilliant Futurama, which I’ll get to next time! Have a nice weekend! Until next week…
This cracked me up… based on the painting Aristotle with a bust of Homer, by Rembrandt, Kirk admires a bust of his friend’s mirror image! I don’t know who made this, but bravo!
From 1978, at the height of Trek revivalism, here’s a lovely sketch by artist Alice Jones. I believe this was either from a fanzine or convention program at the time. It has marvelous intricate detail, and such photo-realism. (If anyone has the source material let me know!)
Gray Morrow (1934-2001)was a comic book and paperback cover artist known for Man Thing and El Diablo, but he also occasionally dabbled in Star Trek. Here’s his works from the early 70’s, including a colorized version for Monster Times (remember that?) Not sure what the obelisk represents in the second image, but these are delightfully dramatic.
Just came across a bunch of these pieces featuring pop culture characters as Egyptian hieroglyphics! Kirk is naturally the pharaoh and Spock is can truly walk like an Egyptian! This is clever in so many ways; I especially love the Gorn in the corner! You can see more of these wonders here.
Found this on Tumblr — So cute. Things go better with tribbles — even Spock is happy! The cartoon styling remind me of the kinds of characters you’d see in a mid century UPA cartoon! The cartoon is credited to annamariajung.com, but I did not see anything like it there.
Recently I’ve come across these silly and often bizarre but very funny Trek toons by South Korean artist simengt. Sometimes the comics are based on actual episodes:
Sometimes she makes up situations:
And quite often, characters change gender:
Her style is somewhere between Chibi and Ren and Stimpy, (especially in the distorted histrionics) but it’s all fun! Keep up the good work!
