1920 was certainly a lucky year for Star Trek Fans — Both DeForest Kelley and James Doohan were born in the same year, and only about two and a half months apart! Today I honor the memory of our beloved “Scotty”, James Doohan, who would have been 100 this year. (b.March 3rd 1920) Jimmy, you’re always in our hearts and a happy memory of our youth.
I was honored to meet Jimmy in 1976 at the Star Trek Bi-Centennial 10 Convention in New York City. My Mom has asked me to ask Jimmy to sing Roamin’ in the Gloaming, and to our delight he sang a line or two. <3 What a wonderful, loving, generous, sweet man. He was a true treasure to Hollywood and to his loving fans; always grateful for what Star Trek brought him. And as Nimoy acknowledged that he was somewhat Spock, Jimmy was definitely Scotty.
And never forget that Scotty may have been a bit of a miracle worker for the Enterprise, but James Doohan was a real-life hero as one of the first platoons to charge Normandy on D-Day; helping to save our real world for democracy. He later helped prevent a young woman from preventing suicide, and was truly touched when 8 years later, she told him she became an engineer! Remembering Jimmy today, and thinking of his family, especially his wonderful son Chris, who beautifully filled his father’s shoes as Scotty in the fan series Star Trek Continues. Bless you Jimmy, always in our hearts!
