The Daily Scrapbook: 3/13/13 (1978) “Nimoy Up to his Ears in Star Trek”

Here’s today’s flashback:  From 1978, a reprint of yesterday’s article from our local paper, a quick blurb with a picture of Leonard and Sandy (yeah, I scoured a lot of movies magazines to find any new pictures on Leonard and Trek people, (Man, was I loser or what?)   .   Is it me or does Sandy always look shocked or worried in pictures? And yet another Grin and Bear It comic, another stereotypical jab at female astronauts (still cute though)V2-014 Complete 2 V2-014C

The Daily Scrapbook: 3/12/13 (August 1978) “Nimoy Shoots Down Myths about Mr. Spock”

Here’s today’s Flashback:  From August 29th and September 10, 1978 –First Nimoy replies to the many fabrications made about Spock over the years, and a quick blurb about how security was tightened for the movie after blueprints were stolen.   I especially like how Nimoy reminds those not familiar with Spock that the character is NOT cold and unemotional, just trained to hide his emotions, which I’m sure isn’t easy for a half-human! The Daily Scrapbook 3/11/13 From 1978, More Trek Movie News, Blueprints Stolen!

Here’s Today’s flashback:  From August 1978, It appears in the ’70’s, fans couldn’t wait for spoilers either. A merchandiser promoting artwork for the Trek movie stole the actual blueprints for the (then) new Enterprise and attempted to sell copies to fans at $75 a pop! That wasn’t nice!   He was caught. Wonder whatever happened to him?  Also, a 1975  Seventeen Magazine asks “Who’s Cool?” and suggests Mr. Spock vs. The Fonz. V2-012

My Weekly Spock 3/4/13 That Eyebrow!

As a kid I used to marvel at how Mr. Spock could raise just one eyebrow- and I practiced until I could (sort of ) raise my right one –mostly by pushing my left one down.   But Nimoy does this with ease, and incorporated it into a surprise reaction from not only Spock, but several other characters as well, making it one of his trademarks.  It’s a wonder that right eyebrow didn’t climb straight off his forehead!

The Daily Scrapbook 2/25/13 Volume II Begins! From April 2, 1978 – Trek more than flight of fancy for many fans…

Hey kids, I finally got a chance to scan the second volume of my 4 Star Trek scrapbooks so lets release the clippings!   First up, from April 2, 1978: a commentary on how Star Trek was almost a way of life for some fans. Now a lot of people at the time may have found me obsessed with Trek, and I was! But I didn’t build my own Enterprise for heaven’s sake!   In this article we also see the first definition of ‘Trekker’ vs. ‘Trekkie’, which seems to have a disdain for the latter.   I’m happy with Trekkie because, heck, it’s just a TV show, a fun, wonderful, insightful and imaginative TV show, but a TV show nonetheless!

You may have also noted the Grin and Bear It comic from the same Sunday paper…Grin and Bear It was always one of my late Dad’s favorite comics, and to this day it is one of mine.  It’s simple but honest humor keeps me in touch with my Dad’s memory, and reading this particular one 3 1/2 years after his death, I knew he would have gotten a kick out of it.   Here it deals with complexities of life with astronauts of the female persuasion…

FArFri 2/8/13 Uhura Wins! By DK Cissner

Uhura_Wins_by_DKCissnerThis has to be one of my favorite Fan Arts of all time, by creative, whimsical artist DK Cissner on DeviantArt.    Her  caricatures always have such a fun vibe and slightly Disney feel (big eyes and expressions)  I just love how she draws Spock too.  If I could hone my sketch drawing to be as good as hers I’d be very happy!
