My Weekly Spock 10/29/12 “Nimoy at the Costume Shop”

Halloween is almost upon us, so since everyone’s in costume, this week I look at Nimoy who,  like his idol, Lon Chaney, was as a man of many faces, especially in his early years when he had a lot of ‘heavy’ roles, and in the Seventies when he did a wide range of characters in theater roles.    Theater was his first love, and I bet he loved getting back on a real stage!  A classmate of mine got to see him as King Arthur in Camelot one summer (1973)  I was so jealous! Let’s just call this ‘Nimoy at the costume shop’.  What should he be for Halloween?

A Doctor?  (The scheming Dr. Barry Mayfield in Columbo)

A Confederate Soldier? (as Kreton from Visit To a Small Planet)

A Navy Captain?  (Assault on the Wayne 1971)

There’s always a cowboy

Or an Indian  (Nah, he’s been too many of those!)  (From Daniel Boone)

Maybe a Magician (from M:I, ‘The Amazing Paris!”)

Maybe a Zombie! (from the Stratosphere!)

Nah — I think King suits him best! (As King Arthur, Camelot, 1973)  Heck, I wish my legs looked that good!

The Daily Scrapbook 10/22/12

Here’s today’s flashback:  From April o f1977.  Movie magazines were getting wise to the renewed Trek phenomenon that was everywhere and actively sought related news that would make good copy (I suppose they couldn’t resist a girl in a chain-mail bikini too)  I was just happy to have a pin-up of Nimoy, even if it was in that silly Tholian Web spacesuit (I bet those six costumes broke the production bank that week!) They were much more sophisticated than the shower curtain get-ups from The Naked Time!)  Love the pensive podium picture too.

The Daily Scrapbook 10/17/12 More Questions and a Quiz

Here’s today’s flashback -sorry it’s late – I had to sub today, and just remembered that I hadn’t posted a daily here!    Today we see more Q&A about a possible Trek movie, questions wondering if Nimoy and The Shat were rivals, a mention of Gene Roddenberry’s Specter ( I still haven’t seen that) and a quiz from another middle school weekly, seeing if you can recall everything in the picture of the Enterprise being tossed like a salad.

The Daily Scrapbook 10/12/12 Programs and Postcards

Here’s today’s flashback:  The 70’s were a busy time for Star Trek people, actors and producers alike.   Here’s a bunch of TV Guide listings for non-Trek projects — The Trek people kept their families fed in the drought between cancellation and the first movie.  Nimoy was the most active, in Catlow with Yul Brynner, (small but sexy role as ‘Miller’,) TV movie The Missing Are Deadly, (which I don’t remember at all) and his popularity was booming so quickly he even got his own interview special in 1976 on PBS, The Man who Played Spock with Bill Varney.  I remember Mom letting me stay up to watch this, it was on at 10, and I recall Varney at one point asking Nimoy to give him a ‘mind-meld’, and Nimoy fondly obliged.   Shatner’s movie, The Tenth Level was a fine  psychological thriller about how far one would go to inflict pain on a stranger.  Both Shatner and Nimoy would appear on Dick Clark’s “The 10,000 Pyramid” Then there were the two movies Gene Roddenberry made, the (unfortunately) failed TV Pilot, Genesis II, and its sequel Planet Earth.  Looking back on it, Genesis was the better of the two, and a great adventure story. Of course, fans were still wondering when Star Trek would be revived (see question), and finally below, my sister Kathy (I had 5) went to California in ’76 and saw the new Star Trek wax figures at the Movieland Wax Museum — see her  postcard-oh I envied her!

Back on Monday with more memories! Let me know what you think!

My Weekly Spock 10/8/12 Batman and Spock Jam!

How cool is this?  A meeting of icons! From Mr. Nimoy’s Twitter feed:  Somewhere in the geek universe, Batman and Mr. Spock jam! I would have loved to have been at this party. I wonder if it was a promotional event?

Adam West (aka Batman) and Leonard Nimoy (aka Mr. Spock) hit the skins at a party, approximately 1966-67

The Daily Scrapbook 10/3/12

Here’s today’s flashback:  Family pictures!

This was the first time I saw a picture of Mr. Nimoy and his family – son Adam, daughter Julie, and (later ex-) wife Sandy. This was definitely Nimoy’s ascot era. I treasured the picture so much I ‘laminated’ it with that new ‘invisible’ tape, (not realizing that it would make the paper yellow even faster!) and the lines fall practically across Nimoy’s eyes.  Sorry about that. Then a TV Guide blurb about one of Nimoy’s 1st post-Mission Impossible stints, an anthology of love stories by famous authors Somerset Maugham, Daphne Du Marier, and Kurt Vonnegut. Nimoy played opposite Juliet Mills (from Nanny and the Professor) in “Kiss Me Again Stranger” which I referred to here.

Another photo of Leonard and Sandy at at art exhibit in 1974,  note how he whipped off  his glasses for this one.   And then a photo of Mr. Shatner with his new (second) bride, the lovely Marcy Lafferty.  I remember really digging her earrings and wondering why a young woman of 27 would marry an old man of 43?  I wonder if Ms. Lafferty  would have reconsidered if she knew she’d  be only the second of his four wives?

Today is my son’s 12th Birthday!  So there should be cake!

Happy Birthday Matt!

And also, here’s Leonard with old cast mate and pal George Takei backstage at George’s new stage musical “Allegience”  (From George’s FB page)  The smile stays the same!

New Feature! Fan Art Friday! (FArFri) Leonard and Spock by Sara Manca

It’s always nice to end your week with a piece of art!  Every Friday I’ll be posting art from around web featuring Trek characters and actors. These will be archived in Categories under “Fan Art”  Enjoy!

To start this series, a wonderful piece by artist Sara Manca from Deviantart   “Leonard and Spock”.    She really captured that ever-present shadow in Nimoy’s life.   I like how she also captured the stride and personalities of each.

My Daily Spock 6/1/12

A sweet farewell kiss to all of you for this daily column! ‘Spock’ will be here on Mondays though, often with multiple pictures, so keep checking back!

I have no idea what this is from, but I bet he was a good guy. (of course!)
